The hardware,
named.

Coutts Electrical publish the brands they work with rather than hiding behind “premium components”. Which one suits your property is decided at survey, from your usage profile — not from a preferred-supplier list.

01 Evidenced in depth

Three brands with
more than a logo.

Each of these is corroborated beyond the brand wall — by published Coutts Electrical pricing, by their own product imagery, or by a named customer review of a completed job. That is why they get a page and the rest do not.

02 The full wall

Every brand,
by category.

Everything Coutts Electrical work with, grouped by what it does. The ones above have a page because something beyond a logo corroborates them; the rest are listed and left at that, which is more honest than inventing a spec sheet for each.

04 How it is chosen

The roof decides,
not the brochure.

Panel choice follows the roof — its pitch, its orientation, its shading and how much of it is usable. Battery and inverter choice follows the usage profile. A firm that leads with a brand is telling you what it has in the van, not what your property needs.

  • 01
Usage profile firstWhat you actually draw, and when, before anything is specified.
  • 02
10 kWh of storage in every guide-priced systemCapacity is the constant; the hardware behind it is the variable.
  • 03
Written into the quotationYou see the specified components before anyone books a scaffold.

05 Hardware

What the brand list is telling you.

The list is grouped into five categories, and a working system draws on several at once: panels, something to convert what they generate, something to hold it, and something to fix the array to the roof. A quotation naming one manufacturer has left the other categories unnamed.

A name on this page is a name Coutts Electrical work with. It is not a stock list and it is not a ranking. Two brands in the same category are not straight swaps either, because batteries arrive in different physical formats and the format decides where the unit can live.

The constraints differ by category, and they interact.

  • 01
Inverters: paired to the array in front of them, and whether a unit can charge a battery as well as export differs from unit to unit
  • 02
Batteries and storage: sold as stacked modules or as a single wall-mounted unit, which decides where it can go and how much clearance it needs
  • 03
Mounting systems: settled by what the roof is covered in and how it is built, the category nobody asks about by name and the one holding everything else up
  • 04
EV charge points: the supply coming into the building sets the ceiling before the car or the brand gets a say

06 Hardware

Questions worth asking about the hardware.

None of these need any technical knowledge to ask, and the answers tell you how much of a specification is genuinely about your property. Ask them at survey, while the design is still open, rather than after a written quotation has fixed it in place.

A brand name on its own is a family of products rather than a single item, so the useful answers are the specific ones. Which model, how many, where each piece ends up, and what that piece is being asked to do once it is switched on.

  • 01
Which model within the range, not just which manufacturer
  • 02
How many panels the roof takes at that size, and what a different panel would change about the count
  • 03
Where each item physically ends up, and how much of it you will see from the garden or the street
  • 04
Whether anything already installed is being kept or replaced, and what makes that the better of the two
  • 05
What happens to the specification if a named item cannot be got when the job comes round

07 Hardware

If something is already on the wall.

A retrofit narrows the list before anyone opens it. Anything new has to work with what is already installed, so the question stops being which brand is best and becomes what talks to what. Occasionally the answer is that keeping a working part costs more than replacing it.

That is worth saying out loud early. What is already there, roughly how old it is, and whether anything about it irritates you all bear on the specification. Mention anything you might add in a year or two as well, even loosely, because a first stage laid out with that in mind looks different.

Photographs help more than descriptions here. The consumer unit with its cover on, the meter, the roof seen from the garden, and where the car parks if a charge point is in the picture. Bring them to the survey and the visit spends its time on the decisions instead.
