Very little commercial work happens in an empty building. There are staff at desks, customers through the door, tills taking payments and stock sitting in chillers, and the job has to fit around all of that rather than the other way round.
So the first conversation is about your day, not our diary. Which hours are genuinely quiet, which circuits cannot be interrupted at all, and who has to be told before power goes anywhere near off. An office is dead by six. A restaurant is not.
The quietest windows in a commercial year — a stocktake day, a refit, a shutdown week — fill up first, which is the argument for settling a date at quotation stage rather than when the parts arrive. Whatever is agreed is confirmed back to you before anyone loads a van.
Access gets settled in the same conversation. Keys, alarm codes, parking, loading bays, permits and the name of the person we ring if something on site is not as described. An engineer stood outside a locked door costs you exactly as much as one who never came.
04 Commercial Electrician
Most commercial jobs do not need the whole building dead. They need one board, one riser or one floor dead, for a known length of time, at a time you choose.
That means proving what feeds what before anything is switched off. Commercial distribution is rarely labelled the way the drawings claim. Boards get extended, sub-mains get borrowed, and the breaker marked SPARE turns out to feed the card machines. Tracing it properly is what stops a planned isolation landing on the wrong department.
From there the work is split into phases, each with an agreed isolation window and a live-again time. Board by board, floor by floor, or front of house and back of house on separate visits. Anything that cannot drop is identified at the start, so it can be left until last or kept live another way.
Where a supply has to be maintained through the works, UPS and standby generators do that job as much as they cover emergencies. It is worth raising at quotation stage rather than on the day, because it changes the method and not just the price.
05 Commercial Electrician
Three separate testing routines run over a commercial premises, and it is common to find a business on top of one of them and unaware of the other two.
An EICR, also known as fixed wire testing, assesses the condition of your electrical installation. This includes cables, sockets, switches and fixed equipment, helping to identify faults, deterioration or non-compliance.
Portable Appliance Testing checks the safety of electrical appliances within your premises. This testing can identify faults that may not be visible during routine visual inspections.
Emergency lighting must operate reliably during power failures. We inspect circuits and battery systems to ensure your emergency lighting functions correctly and remains compliant at all times.
06 Commercial Electrician
Some commercial work is not one building. A managing agent with a portfolio needs the same certificate for every property on it, all falling due on different dates, and needs to know which one is next rather than which one has already lapsed.
Each setting brings its own constraint. A school has the holidays and little else. A care setting cannot lose lighting at any hour. A construction programme means working to someone else's dates, alongside other trades, on a floor that changes shape every week. The electrical work is often ordinary. The planning around it is not.

There is no single interval, because it depends on the type of premises and how hard it is used. The report itself recommends the date of the next inspection, so your last certificate will tell you when you are due. If nobody can find a certificate at all, that is usually reason enough to book one.
