01 Electrical Installations
Most of the cost and disruption of an installation is decided before anyone picks up a tool — in where cables run, how circuits are grouped and how the board is arranged.
We take a methodical room-by-room approach, and always leave the space clean and tidy once the work is complete.
02 Electrical Installations
First fix is everything that has to happen while the walls are still open, including the position of the consumer unit and the route back to the meter. Then the plasterer, the joiner and the decorator take over — and for a stretch of the build nothing electrical appears to happen at all.
Second fix is the visible half — the first point at which the work looks like anything. Accessories are terminated and fitted, light fittings are hung, the board is wired and labelled, and the installation is energised.
03 Electrical Installations
On a renovation we are one trade among several working to the same programme. First fix has to land once the structural work is done and the stud walls are up, and before the plasterer arrives; second fix comes after decoration, usually alongside the kitchen or bathroom fit.
The practical effect is that we need decisions from you while the rooms are still stripped and hard to picture — where the sofa will eventually sit is what decides where the sockets go.
Positions are easiest to get right when they are marked up on the wall in the bare room rather than agreed from a drawing, because what is being approved is then something you can stand in front of and look at. These are the decisions to settle before first fix:
04 Electrical Installations
Not every installation belongs to a building project. A garden office, a workshop supply, an electric shower or an EV charge point all need a new circuit run through a house that is decorated, furnished and lived in.
The work then becomes mostly route-finding — lifting a run of floorboards, using existing voids and the loft space. Where a chase genuinely cannot be avoided, that is far better established before the job starts than discovered halfway through it.
A supply to an outbuilding is a small design job in its own right. The cable size has to suit the length of the run, the way it is buried has to suit the ground it crosses, and the earthing arrangement at the far end is settled before anyone starts digging.

07 Questions
It depends on the scope rather than on what the job is called. A full first fix behind stripped-back plaster is much easier in an empty property, whereas additions and partial rewires in an occupied house are normally staged so that each area is worked on and closed up in turn, with the supply restored at the end of the stage. What matters is knowing which of the two you are having before anything starts, because it changes how you plan the rest of the work.
Yes, and it is a great deal less work to allow for it while the walls are open than to cut a route in afterwards. Allowance usually means leaving spare ways in the consumer unit, sizing and positioning the board with the extra load in mind, and running a route or a draw cord from the board out to wherever a charge point or an inverter would eventually go. It is worth telling us what you are considering even if it is years away and undecided.
Sometimes one, sometimes the other. A kitchen or utility area with heavy appliances on it usually justifies a circuit of its own; one extra socket in a bedroom rarely does. Either way it is a question to settle while positions are being marked up, rather than after the plaster is on.
Cables in walls are run straight up or across from the accessory they serve rather than diagonally, which is what makes a cable detector reading mean anything when you come to hang a shelf. Where a run has to take a different line it is given mechanical protection instead, and it is worth asking to have those runs pointed out to you before the plaster goes on.
