Wired from 1898, built before it
Bromley town centre had gas from 1837 and mains electricity from 1898, generated at a power station in Walter’s Yard. The council’s 2025 appraisal of the town-centre conservation area credits that modernisation with turning a small market town into a busy suburban centre, the same period in which most of the housing on the High Street and Market Square was converted to commercial use.
Many of the ward’s homes are older than that supply, or nearly as old. Of the 7,520 council-tax properties in Bromley Town ward, 1,160 were built before 1900, and 1,570 (20.9%) predate 1919, against 17.0% across the borough. Most of those had their wiring added later, and every conversion into flats or bedsits since has added another round of it, joined to the last somewhere out of sight under a floor or in a roof space. None of that is for you to open up at night. A faceplate warm to the touch, a scorched smell, or an RCD that drops as soon as you lift it all get the same answer: switch that circuit off and phone.
The ward has a younger layer too: 640 properties (8.5%) date from 2000 to 2008, twice the borough’s 4.1%. Wiring that recent is a less likely culprit than whatever is plugged into it, or water reaching it, so note what was switched on when the power went, and look up: a leak from a flat above can reach a ceiling light fitting.
Your flat, your building or the street?
Flats house 54.8% of the ward’s households, against 31.3% across the borough, and 41.7% of households live in purpose-built blocks. In one of those, step onto the landing first. If the corridor lights, lift and door entry are dead along with your flat, suspect the building’s incoming supply or the network: ring 105 and tell the managing agent. Landings dark while your flat is lit points to the block’s communal supply, which the agent arranges to have repaired. Landings lit and only your flat dark means your own board: a switch that will not stay up is a call to us.
Converted and shared houses are home to 9.9% of the ward’s households, against 5.8% borough-wide, and the meters and boards for upper floors are sometimes in a shared hall or cellar, so find out now who holds that key. Another 115 households (1.7%) live in a commercial building, such as over a shop, where the meter can sit behind a shutter locked at closing time. Smoke from any meter cupboard means everyone out and 999 first.
Two licence areas, one number
UK Power Networks runs the network under Bromley’s streets, under two licences. BR1 1AA and BR1 3AA in the town centre, and BR2 0AA in Shortlands, sit in its London Power Networks area; BR2 7AA in Hayes falls under South Eastern Power Networks. On either licence, a power cut is reported on 105, a free call. That includes the case where every switch on your board is up and there is still nothing, which usually points to the sealed cut-out beside the meter: the network operator’s equipment, not ours and not yours.
4.1 miles from Keston
Our office at Glebe Farm Business Park, Keston is in the same borough and the same Bromley and Biggin Hill constituency as the town centre, 4.1 miles (6.6 km) to the south in a straight line. We are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and where emergency attendance is requested an engineer is dispatched within 30 minutes. That is when the engineer sets off, not when they reach you, and the road is longer than the map line, so ask when to expect them.
Until then, switch off the affected circuit from a dry floor, or the main switch if unsure, and unplug whatever was running. If your board is in the shop below or a shared cellar, ring the key-holder rather than forcing a door. On arrival the installation is made safe first, then the fault is diagnosed and explained. Our emergency electrician service page separates faults that need a visit tonight from those that can wait, and our guide to what electricians charge for out-of-hours call-outs shows how those rates are usually built up.
Electric heat, renters and protected buildings
At the 2021 Census, 860 of the ward’s households (12.8%) relied on electric-only heating, close to twice the borough’s 6.8%; for them a circuit that will not reset can take the heating with it, so mention anyone at home who would be at risk in a cold flat. Another 148 households (2.2%, against 0.8% borough-wide) were heated only by a communal or district heat network: radiators cold while your lights still work is usually one to report first to whoever runs the heat network.
Private renters are 32.6% of households, against 17.4% across the borough. If you rent, tell your landlord the same night, as under most tenancies the lasting repair is theirs to arrange. Landlords letting in the ward will find their inspection duties in our guide to landlord electrical checks.
The conservation area, designated in 1985, takes in the High Street, Market Square and East, West and North Streets. Listed buildings inside the ward include two at Grade I, Bromley College and its gateway, and Bromley North station at Grade II. Making a circuit safe does not alter a building, but a permanent repair running new cable through the fabric of a listed building may need listed building consent from Bromley council first. Follow-up and planned work are covered on our electrician in Bromley page.

02 Questions from Bromley
Emergency electrician,
answered for Bromley.
The street lights in central Bromley went out when my power did. Who do I call?
Ring 105, free. When the street and the buildings around you are dark too, the fault is almost certainly on the network, and the town-centre postcodes we checked, BR1 1AA and BR1 3AA, are on UK Power Networks' London Power Networks licence. An electrician cannot repair the network. If the street comes back and your home stays dark, check your consumer unit: a switch that will not stay up is ours, while nothing tripped points to the cut-out, which is UK Power Networks' again.
The RCD in our converted Bromley house keeps tripping. Is that an emergency?
If it drops again as soon as you lift it, or a socket, switch or the board feels warm or smells scorched, leave it off and call us. Mains electricity reached Bromley town centre from 1898, and 1,160 properties in Bromley Town ward were built before 1900, so many had their wiring added afterwards, and each conversion into flats adds another layer. Repeated trips in a building wired in stages need testing, not resetting. If it holds with one circuit off, a daytime visit is usually fine.
How soon will an engineer be on the way to Bromley, and how long is the journey?
Where emergency attendance is requested, an engineer is dispatched within 30 minutes, at any hour on any day of the year. That is the time to send someone, not an arrival time. Our office at Glebe Farm Business Park, Keston is 4.1 miles from the town centre in a straight line, and the road is longer, so ask for an estimate when you call. In a block, give us the building name, the entrance, the floor and how to get through the door entry.
I rent a flat above a shop on Bromley High Street and the power is off. What should I do?
Check whether the shop below is lit. If it is and you are not, look at your consumer unit: something tripped that will not reset, or any smell of burning, is a call to us, and your landlord should hear about it the same night, because under most tenancies wiring repairs are the landlord's to arrange. If nothing has tripped, ring 105. Over a shop the meter is sometimes inside the shop itself, so tell us who holds the key after closing.
