Croydon EV charger installation

EV Charger Installation in Croydon

In central Croydon 52.1% of households had no car or van in 2021 and 71.3% lived in a flat, so a home charger here usually means a bay beside a block, a cable across the pavement where the council allows one, or one of the few houses with a drive. We are OZEV approved and check the supply and consumer unit before anything is quoted. Up to £500 of OZEV funding, available until 31 March 2027, can go to a flat owner, a tenant, a landlord or a household that parks on the street; a homeowner with a drive gets none.

Who has a car in central Croydon

The figures below cover six census neighbourhoods: Central Croydon, South End & St Peter’s Road, Croydon Minster & Waddon North, Selhurst South & West Croydon, Addiscombe West, and Park Hill & Lloyd Park. Purley, Coulsdon and the rest of the borough sit outside them. At the 2021 Census, 52.1% of their 25,794 households had no car or van, against 33.6% across the borough and 23.5% in England. In the Central Croydon neighbourhood itself, 68.1% had none.

The Census does not ask where people park, so housing is the nearest guide to where the other 47.9% leave their cars at night: 71.3% of central households lived in a flat, maisonette or apartment, against 39.7% borough-wide, and only 5.0% in a detached house. For most central households, the first question about a charger is who owns the space the car stands in.

Bays beside the blocks

In the Central Croydon neighbourhood, roughly seven homes in ten (70.9%) date from 2010 or later, and in 2021 almost four households in five (79.8%) lived in a purpose-built block. A block’s car park normally belongs to the freeholder, so the managing agent’s written agreement settles the cable route and whether the charger runs from your own flat’s meter or a landlord supply. Part S of the Building Regulations has required charge points for new homes with parking only since 15 June 2022, and 2,960 of the neighbourhood’s 4,850 post-2010 homes were finished by the end of 2021, so a bay beside one of those blocks may have no supply laid to it. Where the law did require a charge point for your bay, OZEV’s flats and renters grant will not pay for one.

The 3,315 households in flats carved out of converted or shared houses raise a different question: several meters can hang off one incoming supply, and the survey decides which of them can carry a charger.

Park Hill drives and the Chatsworth Road rules

The house-owning pocket is Park Hill & Lloyd Park: in 2021, 20.8% of its 2,942 households lived in a detached house and 50.2% owned their home, the highest shares of the six neighbourhoods. A drive there puts the charger on a wall the household controls, but an owner-occupier with a drive is the one household none of OZEV’s grants reaches, so the guide price is the starting point.

Chatsworth Road, in Fairfield ward, is the opposite case. Its conservation area is a group of late Victorian and Edwardian houses, most with large front gardens, and Croydon Council’s Article 4 Direction, in force from 21 January 2016, removes permitted development there for hard surfaces within a house’s grounds, a new access to the highway and solar panels. Turning a front garden into a parking space needs planning permission, and the council’s management plan says parking may not be appropriate and asks for permeable surfacing where it is accepted.

£500 grants for renters, landlords and kerbside homes

In 2021, 45.6% of central households rented privately, and in Fairfield, the town-centre ward around Wellesley Road and Church Street, 57.9% did, against 20.5% in England. Three of OZEV’s home chargepoint grants are written for households like these, each worth up to £500 since 1 April 2026 and open until 31 March 2027:

  • Flat owners, and tenants of any home, with private off-street parking: 75% of the cost, up to £500, if they own, lease, use as a work vehicle or have ordered an eligible electric vehicle.
  • Residential landlords who do not live in the property: 75% of the cost, up to £500 per socket, for up to 200 sockets a year.
  • Households with only on-street parking: 75% of the cost, up to £500, for a charger fed through a permanent cross-pavement channel. A cable laid over the pavement under a mat does not qualify.

All three are applied for before any work: a charger fitted before OZEV confirms eligibility cannot be funded, and the installer claims the grant once the job is finished. We are OZEV approved. For the grants set beside what off-peak charging at home can save, read what a home charger saves, and who the grants help.

Kerbside charging and Croydon Council

The kerbside grant also needs the highway authority’s consent: Croydon Council on borough roads, Transport for London on its red routes. In August 2026 the council said it had received £193,000 to pilot and potentially roll out cross-pavement solutions, alongside about £950,000 of OZEV funding to 2028 for new charging points, and put the share of the borough’s households without a private driveway at 49%. The announcement did not set out how residents apply, so check with the council’s highways team that your street can take a channel before the quote assumes the grant.

Supply, earthing and the South Eastern network

At full rate a 7 kW charger pulls about 32 A, often for most of a night, so our load assessment adds it to the maximum demand on the main fuse actually fitted, whether in a converted house in Addiscombe or a flat several floors above its bay. In Addiscombe West, 51.8% of homes were built before 1919, and an older consumer unit may have no spare way or lack the RCD protection a charger circuit needs. On a PME supply, BS 7671 does not let the network’s earth serve a charger for a car parked outdoors unless the risk from a broken PEN conductor is dealt with, by detection in the charger or by an earth electrode, so a basement car park, a surface bay and a Park Hill drive can each need a different answer.

London borough or not, two town-centre postcodes, CR0 1AA and CR0 1NX, both return Elexon group _J: UK Power Networks’ South Eastern licence, not its London Power Networks one. UK Power Networks has to be told about every home charger: after fitting where the supply has room, or by application before the work where it does not.

Public chargers and solar roofs

Without a home charger, the borough’s public network is thinner than London’s: the Department for Transport counted 627 public chargers in Croydon on 1 July 2026, 153 per 100,000 residents, against 345 for London and 173 for England. Croydon West, the constituency that holds CR0 1AA, had 250, of which 104 were rated 50 kW or more.

Where a roof can take panels, a solar-matched charger puts the midday surplus into the car rather than the grid. Croydon had 5,161 solar PV sites by the close of 2025 on DESNZ’s count, a borough-wide figure, and at CR0 1AA PVGIS puts the output of a 4 kWp roof facing south, with no shade, at 4,104 kWh in an average year. Solar integration is offered with all six chargers we price on our EV charger installation service page, though on Chatsworth Road the panels themselves need planning permission first.

Measured as the crow flies, central Croydon lies 6 miles (9.7 km) west-north-west of our Keston office on Westerham Road; the drive is longer. For the rest of the wiring, from a Fairfield flat to a pre-1919 house in Addiscombe, see our page for an electrician in Croydon.

02 Questions from Croydon

EV charger installation,
answered for Croydon.

I own a flat in a central Croydon block with an allocated bay. Can I get the OZEV grant?

Probably, if you live in the flat, the bay is private, off the street and always available to you, and you own, lease or have ordered an eligible electric vehicle. OZEV's flats and renters grant pays 75% of the cost, up to £500, until 31 March 2027. Get the freeholder's or managing agent's permission in writing, then apply; nothing goes on the wall until OZEV has confirmed your eligibility, and the installer claims the money after fitting. If the law required a charge point for your bay when the block was built, the grant does not apply.

We own a house in Park Hill with a drive. Will OZEV help, and what would we pay?

No OZEV grant covers you: the chargepoint grants open until 31 March 2027 exclude owner-occupiers of a house with its own off-street parking. On our published guide prices, a Hypervolt is from £1,080 + VAT and a 7 kW myenergi Zappi from £1,100 + VAT. All prices are subject to VAT. VAT charges may vary depending on the job to be undertaken. The exact VAT applicable to your work will be confirmed on our written quotation.

Our house is in the Chatsworth Road conservation area and we park on the street. What are our options?

Both routes need consent first. Croydon Council's Article 4 Direction there, in force from 21 January 2016, removes permitted development for hard surfaces within a house's grounds and for a new access onto the highway, so paving the front garden for a drive needs planning permission, and the council's management plan for the area says parking may not be appropriate. The other route is OZEV's grant for households with on-street parking, which meets three-quarters of the cost, capped at £500, until 31 March 2027, provided the cable reaches the car through a permanent channel set into the pavement with the highway authority's consent. In August 2026 Croydon Council said it had funding to pilot cross-pavement solutions, so ask its highways team about your street before counting on the grant.

Croydon is in London. Why is my supply on UK Power Networks' South Eastern network?

Because the network licence boundaries do not follow the London boundary. CR0 1AA and CR0 1NX in the town centre both return grid supply point group _J, South Eastern Power Networks, rather than the London Power Networks licence. It makes no difference to the charger itself: UK Power Networks runs both licences and has to be told about a home charger either way, after fitting where the supply has room or by application before the work where it does not.
