West Wickham EV charger installation

EV Charger Installation in West Wickham

In West Wickham ward, 85.5% of households had a car or van at the 2021 Census and 41.8% had two or more, against 30.8% across Bromley, so a home charger here may have to serve more than one car. Before quoting we check the supply, from the main fuse to the earthing, and where each car parks; the charger is then notified to UK Power Networks, whose South Eastern licence takes in BR4 0AA although the town is in a London borough. Until 31 March 2027, OZEV grants pay up to £500 a socket towards chargers for flat owners, renters, landlords and households that can only park on the street; the owner-occupier of a house with its own drive gets nothing.

Two-car households on 1930s streets

At the 2021 Census, 85.5% of West Wickham ward’s 5,705 households had a car or van, and only 14.5% had none, against 22.9% across Bromley. The sharper difference is the second car: 41.8% had two or more, against 30.8% borough-wide, and 654 households had three or more.

The ward is also a place of houses rather than flats. 82.9% of households live in a whole house, and the semi is the commonest home at 47.3%, against 29.9% across the borough. On the Valuation Office Agency’s count at 31 March 2026, 65.5% of homes in Bromley 030, the statistical area that covers most of the ward, were built in the 1930s, against 25.6% across Bromley. Driveways and garages are not a Census question, so the first job at a survey is to see where each car stands and measure the run back to the consumer unit.

One charger or two?

A 7 kW charger draws roughly 32 amps while a car fills; two at once would ask about 64 amps of the supply before the oven or kettle is counted. So in a two-car West Wickham household we read the main fuse and consumer unit first and work out the maximum demand with the charging added. One answer is a single unit the cars share in turn, sited so its lead reaches both: a Hypervolt can be ordered with a lead of 5, 7.5 or 10 metres. Where both cars must charge the same night, two units with their combined current capped can work instead.

Mains gas alone heats 85.9% of the ward’s households; the 323 on electric-only heating, where the sums are tightest, are covered in the questions below.

Grants for flats, lets and kerbside parking

One West Wickham household in six lives in a flat: 949 in all, 719 in purpose-built blocks and 123 in a commercial building such as a flat over a shop. Across Bromley the share is 31.3%. Flats, rented homes and kerbside parking are where OZEV’s chargepoint grants are aimed. Since 1 April 2026 each has paid up to £500 a socket, and the schemes run to 31 March 2027.

Owners of flats, and renters, who have a private, clearly defined off-street space get 75% of the cost, capped at £500, provided they own or use an eligible electric vehicle. Landlords can apply for 75% of the cost, up to £500 for each socket, for up to 200 sockets across their properties; 527 households here rented from a private landlord or agency in 2021. Where the street is the only place to park, the same 75%, up to £500, goes towards a charger installed with a permanent cross-pavement solution such as a cable channel (cable mats and covers do not qualify), once the local highway authority (Bromley Council, on borough roads) has consented. The owner-occupier of a house with its own drive gets none of this, and 84.3% of the ward’s households own their home. Under every scheme the charger goes in only after OZEV has confirmed eligibility; as OZEV-approved installers we then claim the grant once the work is done, and our guide to installing a home EV charger sets out who each scheme covers.

Earthing a charger beside a semi

2,697 of the ward’s households live in a semi. Where a charger goes on the side or front wall of one, beside the drive, BS 7671 treats it as charging a vehicle outdoors. On a PME supply, where the earth is taken from UK Power Networks’ combined neutral and earth conductor, the regulations bar that earth from serving the charger unless one of their listed safeguards is used, such as open-PEN detection built into the charger or a separate earth electrode. We establish the supply type at the survey, before picking a unit.

A London borough on the South Eastern licence

West Wickham is in Greater London, yet BR4 0AA returns Elexon’s grid supply point group _J, which belongs to UK Power Networks’ South Eastern licence rather than its London one. BR1 1AA in Bromley and BR3 1AA in Beckenham return group _C, the London licence. Every home charger is reported to UK Power Networks: a supply with room for the new maximum demand gets the charger first and the paperwork after, while one without room needs an application, and the network’s decision on any upgrade, before work starts. Power cuts are reported on 105, free.

When charging at home isn’t possible

For a West Wickham driver with no drive, no bay and no permitted cable route, the fallback is the public network, and Bromley’s is thinner than its neighbour’s. The Department for Transport’s count, compiled from Zapmap data, gave the whole London Borough of Bromley 225 public chargers on 1 July 2026, down from 243 on 1 January, 80 of them 50 kW or more: 67.1 per 100,000 people. Croydon, whose boundary is close by, had 153.2 per 100,000.

Panels, listed walls and Biggin Hill

For an unshaded West Wickham roof carrying 4 kWp of panels, facing south at a 35° pitch, PVGIS puts the long-term yearly output at 4,128 kWh. Solar integration is an option on all six chargers on our price list for EV charger installation, so a car parked at home in the daytime can take up generation the house would otherwise export.

Our Biggin Hill office, at 214 Main Road, is 4.9 miles (7.9 km) away in a straight line, not by road. The ward has seven entries on the National Heritage List, every one Grade II, The Swan on the High Street among them; Wickham Court and the parish church of St John the Baptist stand just over the boundary in Hayes & Coney Hall ward. If you live in a listed building, mention it at booking: a charger fixed to it can need Bromley’s listed building consent first, and an application for OZEV’s grant for flat owners and renters must include the council’s written permission to install the chargepoint. Other work on the house is covered by our electrician in West Wickham page.

02 Questions from West Wickham

EV charger installation,
answered for West Wickham.

Is there an OZEV grant for a charger on our own drive in West Wickham, and what does one cost?

Not if you own the house and park on its drive: an owner-occupied house with off-street parking is outside every OZEV home chargepoint grant, although the grants pay flat owners, renters, landlords and households with only on-street parking up to £500 a socket until 31 March 2027. In West Wickham ward, 84.3% of households own their home. A Hypervolt is priced from £1,080 + VAT, and a 7 kW myenergi Zappi from £1,100 + VAT. All prices are subject to VAT, which may vary with the job; the exact VAT is confirmed on our written quotation.

We are a two-car household in West Wickham. Will one charger do, or do we need two?

That turns on how far you each drive and where the cars stand. A single unit charging the cars in turn can be enough if its lead reaches both bays. Two chargers can only run together if the supply carries both, or if their combined current is capped, so the survey reads your main fuse first. At the 2021 Census, 2,386 of the ward's 5,705 households (41.8%) had two or more cars or vans.

Our block of flats in West Wickham has a residents' car park. Can each owner have a charger?

Each owner whose space is off-street, private, clearly defined, open to them at all times and theirs by ownership or legal right can apply for OZEV's grant for flat owners and renters, provided they own or use an eligible electric vehicle. It pays 75% of the cost, up to £500, until 31 March 2027. The application needs a dated quote from an OZEV-approved installer and written permission from the landlord, freeholder or property manager, and the charger cannot go in until OZEV has approved it; once it is fitted, the installer, such as Coutts Electrical, claims the grant on your behalf. Our supply check traces each bay back to the supply that would feed it. At the 2021 Census, 719 households in the ward lived in purpose-built blocks of flats.

We heat our West Wickham home with electricity only. Can the supply take a car charger too?

Possibly, but this is where the sums are tightest, because electric heating and an overnight charge can draw power at the same time. The survey adds both to the house's maximum demand. If the total fits the supply, the charger is fitted and UK Power Networks is notified afterwards; if not, an application goes in first and the network decides on any upgrade. Some chargers can lower their rate when the house is busy. At the 2021 Census, 323 households in the ward had electric-only central heating.
