Croydon Emergency electrician
Emergency electrician in Croydon, for Addiscombe's Victorian houses and the town centre's new flats
Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and where emergency attendance is requested at a Croydon address an engineer is dispatched within 30 minutes; our Keston office is 6 miles from the town centre in a straight line, further by road. Central Croydon is supplied under UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks licence, so if the street lamps went out with your lights, ring 105, which is free. A breaker that will not stay on, a smell of burning or water reaching a fitting inside your own flat or house is ours to make safe.

Built before 1919 or from 2000: two homes in three
Here, central Croydon means the six census neighbourhoods around the town centre, from Addiscombe West to Croydon Minster & Waddon North. The Valuation Office Agency counted 31,460 homes there at 31 March 2026: 9,990 built before 1919 and 10,670 in 2000 or later, together 65.7% of the stock. Homes from 1919 to 1939, almost a quarter of the borough’s stock (23.3%), are just 5.3% here. So an emergency call from the centre most often means wiring in a building more than a century old, or in one put up this century, and the likely faults differ. Calling from Purley, Coulsdon or Thornton Heath? These figures do not describe your street; borough-wide, 28.2% of homes predate 1919.
Addiscombe and the Victorian streets
The older stock runs deepest in Addiscombe West, where 3,160 of 6,100 homes (51.8%) predate 1919, the highest share of the six. The East India Estate conservation area lies inside that neighbourhood, a suburb built on land of the East India Company’s former military academy, which the council notes for its grid layout and many fine Victorian houses. Nearer the centre, in Fairfield ward, the council describes the Wellesley Road (North) conservation area as early and mid-Victorian houses, some of the oldest surviving in the town centre. Many of Addiscombe’s houses have since been divided: in 2021, 19.2% of Addiscombe West households lived in part of a converted or shared house, against 8.5% across the borough.
A house rewired, extended and then split into flats can carry cable from several decades, joined under floorboards and in lofts, and a loose joint is where heat builds. A warm faceplate, a smell of hot plastic or a breaker that drops each evening under load all mean: switch that circuit off and call. In a conversion, an upper flat’s board may be in the shared hall or cellar; check where yours is, and who keeps the key, while the lights work.
The town-centre blocks
In the Central Croydon neighbourhood, 4,850 of 6,840 homes (70.9%) were built in 2010 or later, and 79.8% of households lived in purpose-built flats at the 2021 Census. In wiring that new, wear is an unlikely cause, so when a flat there loses power, look first for water from upstairs reaching a ceiling light, or an appliance tripping the RCD. Corridor lights, lift or door entry down while your own flat is fine points to the building’s landlord supply, a job for the managing agent. Across central Croydon, 430 households lived in a commercial building in 2021, over a shop or in an office block for example, and 488 more in another converted building. If your meter is behind a locked landing cupboard or the shop door below, say so when you ring and tell us who holds the key; do not force a door.
South Eastern Power Networks, 105, or us
Croydon is a London borough, but its town centre is not on UK Power Networks’ London licence: CR0 1AA and CR0 1NX are in grid supply point group _J, the South Eastern Power Networks area. You need not know which: 105 is free and finds the right operator. With 71.3% of central households in flats, check the landing and the street first. Lamp posts and the next building dark too: ring 105. Every switch up and still no power: ring 105 too, since the sealed cut-out at the intake is the operator’s. Street lit, and a breaker that will not stay on, a smell of burning or water near a fitting: ring us.
Before the engineer reaches a CR0 address
Croydon town centre is 6 miles (9.7 km) west-north-west of our office at Glebe Farm Business Park, Keston in a straight line, and further by road. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and where emergency attendance is requested at a CR0 address, as anywhere we cover, an engineer is dispatched within 30 minutes. That is when someone is sent, not when they reach your door, so ask for a likely arrival time. Give the building name, entrance and floor as well as the street: in a town centre where seven households in ten live in flats, a door number alone may not find you.
Smoke or flame is a 999 call before anything else. Otherwise switch off the circuit involved, or the main switch if unsure, provided the board is dry and safe to reach. Leave a breaker that has dropped twice where it is, unplug whatever was running and keep clear of any fitting water is reaching. On arrival, the installation is made safe first; the cause is traced and explained afterwards. Our 24/7 emergency electrician service sets out which faults can wait for daylight, and our guide to electrician call-out costs explains how out-of-hours charges usually work.
Renters in Fairfield, owners in Park Hill
In Fairfield, the ward taking in Wellesley Road, Church Street and the Minster, 57.9% of households rented privately in 2021, against 25.8% across the borough. Renters can still isolate a dangerous circuit; then tell the landlord or agent that night, as the lasting repair normally falls to them. Fairfield and both Addiscombe wards are among the 14 wards in Croydon Council’s selective licensing scheme, in force from 25 September 2026, whose licence conditions include an EICR every 5 years. A night call-out does not replace that report, so pass the engineer’s findings to the licence holder. Our guide to landlord electrical checks covers the five-yearly inspection that private lets in England already need.
Park Hill & Lloyd Park is different: 50.2% of households owned their home in 2021 and 20.8% lived in a detached house, the highest shares among the six central neighbourhoods. An owner there books the follow-up repair directly: start from our electrician in Croydon page.

02 Questions from Croydon
Emergency electrician,
answered for Croydon.
Every flat in our central Croydon block has lost power at once. Is that you or UK Power Networks?
Look outside first. If the street lamps and the buildings opposite are dark too, it is a network fault: ring 105, free, which for central Croydon reaches UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks. If the street is lit but your whole building is out, the fault is probably at the building's intake or landlord supply, so ring 105 and the managing agent. If only your own flat is dead and a breaker will not stay up, ring us.
How soon is an engineer sent to Croydon, and how far do they come?
At any hour, on any day of the year, where emergency attendance is requested an engineer is dispatched within 30 minutes. Those minutes run until someone is sent, not until they reach you. Our office at Glebe Farm Business Park, Keston is 6 miles from Croydon town centre in a straight line and further by road, so ask on the call when to expect the engineer, and give the building name, entrance and floor.
I rent a converted Victorian flat in Addiscombe and the RCD keeps tripping. Do I ring you or my landlord?
Leave it off and unplug whatever was running. If a socket, switch or the board is warm, scorched or damp, ring us now. If not, tell your landlord or agent straight away, since the lasting repair is normally theirs to arrange. Addiscombe West has the highest share of pre-1919 homes in central Croydon, 51.8%, and both Addiscombe wards are in the council's selective licensing scheme, whose licence conditions require an EICR every 5 years.
Water is dripping from the light fitting in my new-build flat. What do I do first?
Keep away from the fitting and leave its switch alone. If the floor by your consumer unit is dry, turn off the lighting circuit, or the main switch if the labels are unclear, then ring us. Knock on the flat above or call the managing agent so the leak is stopped at source. In the Central Croydon neighbourhood, 79.8% of households lived in purpose-built flats in 2021, so one leak can reach several ceilings.
