Bromley EV charger installation
EV Charger Installation in Bromley
In Bromley Town ward, 32.3% of households had no car or van at the 2021 Census and 54.8% lived in flats, so the first question is usually who controls the parking space and the cable route to it. OZEV grants of up to £500 a socket, open until 31 March 2027, cover flat owners, renters, landlords and on-street homes with a footway channel, but not an owner-occupied house with its own drive. We check your supply and consumer unit before quoting, and the charger is notified to UK Power Networks, which runs the town centre's network under its London Power Networks licence.

A ward of flats, with fewer cars
These Census figures are for Bromley Town, the 2022 ward around the High Street and Market Square that also takes in Bromley North and Bromley South. Of its 6,718 households in 2021, 2,171 (32.3%) had no car or van, against 22.9% across the borough, and seven in ten households with a car had just one. More than half, 54.8%, lived in flats, against 31.3% borough-wide. Where the car spends the night, and who controls that ground, usually settles a town-centre charger before the choice of unit does.
Blocks, conversions and flats over shops
The 41.7% of households in purpose-built blocks may be able to feed a charger from the flat’s own meter or from a landlord supply, but either way the cable crosses ground the freeholder or managing agent controls. OZEV’s flats and renters grant wants their written permission in hand before you apply, and the council’s as well where the building is listed.
Converted and shared houses hold another 9.9%. There, one incoming supply may feed several flats’ meters and a landlord supply, and which of them can carry a 7 kW charger’s 32 amps for hours is settled at the survey. If you own and live in one flat of a converted house, OZEV counts you as a flat owner, not a homeowner. The 1.7% living in commercial buildings, such as over a shop, need a private off-street space of their own before that grant applies at all.
Older buildings are commoner here too. The Valuation Office Agency counts 1,570 of the 7,520 council-tax properties in the nine LSOAs that make up the ward (20.9%) as built before 1919, against 17.0% across the borough. Whatever the age, we check the supply and consumer unit before quoting, and a board without a spare way or the RCD protection a charger circuit needs has to be put right first.
Renters, landlords and the £500 grants
On 1 April 2026 OZEV raised its home chargepoint grants to a maximum of £500 a socket, and every one of them closes on 31 March 2027. Tenure decides which applies, and private renting is unusually common in the ward: 2,192 households (32.6%) rented privately in 2021, against 17.4% across the borough, while owner-occupiers were 56.2% against 68.5%.
Tenants of any home, and owners who live in their flat, can have 75% of the cost covered, up to £500, if the home has its own private off-street space; tenants also need their landlord’s written permission. Landlords registered at Companies House or for VAT can claim up to £500 a socket for let homes with off-street spaces. An owner-occupied house with its own drive is the one home none of the schemes covers. You apply with our quote, nothing is fitted until OZEV confirms eligibility, and as an OZEV-approved installer we then claim the grant. For the wider picture, see the benefits of installing a home EV charger.
Kerbside charging and the council’s gully
For a house with no drive, OZEV’s on-street grant pays up to £500 only where a permanent channel takes the cable across the footway, never a cover or mat laid on top, and only with the highway authority’s consent. Here that is the London Borough of Bromley, which after a trial now takes applications for a gully in the footway outside a resident’s home, at £799 in all and with no charger included. Because the cable has to run straight from your own frontage into the gully, it suits the 45.2% of the ward’s households living in houses far better than a flat in a block.
Electric heating, the network and the earth
860 households in the ward (12.8%) heat with electricity alone, nearly double the borough’s 6.8%. In those homes the charger shares the supply with the heating, and storage heaters, where fitted, draw in the same overnight hours as a car. Where the two together would overload the main fuse, a load-managed charger throttles back while the heating draws.
BR1 1AA and BR1 3AA, both in the ward, and BR2 0AA in Shortlands are on UK Power Networks’ London Power Networks licence, while BR2 7AA in Hayes is on its South Eastern licence. Either way the network is told about the charger: afterwards if the supply has headroom, by application before fitting if not.
A bay in a block’s car park also puts the car outdoors. On a PME supply, where neutral and earth share one conductor in the network’s cable, BS 7671 does not allow that earth alone for an outdoor charge point; a charger with built-in open-PEN protection, or a separate earth rod, is the usual answer.
The conservation area and listed buildings
Much of the centre lies in the Bromley Town Centre Conservation Area, designated in 1985, which runs from the High Street and Market Square west into the Ravensbourne valley, taking in Church Road, Glassmill Lane and Queen’s Mead Road. Its appraisal, adopted on 25 June 2025, asks that plant and other equipment generally sit out of view from the public realm, so a charger on a street-facing wall is worth raising with the council first. Historic England’s list plots 27 entries inside the ward, among them Bromley College and its gateway at Grade I, and Bromley North station and the Old Palace at Grade II. Fixing a charger to a listed building, or within its grounds, can need the council’s consent, so tell us when you book.
Public chargers, panels and Biggin Hill
Without a space of your own, public charging is thin by London standards: on 1 July 2026 the Department for Transport counted 225 public chargers in the borough, 80 of them 50 kW or more, or 67.1 per 100,000 residents against London’s 345.1. Inside the ward, the council’s Stockwell Close multi-storey has 12 rapid DC chargers open to every make and 5 AC units, and there you pay for the bay as well as the electricity. The council is not currently taking requests for new on-street charge point locations.
Where a house has panels, every charger we price can be ordered with solar integration, and PVGIS puts the yearly output of an unshaded 4 kWp array at BR1 1AA, facing south at 35°, at 4,156 kWh. The cheapest unit we price, a Hypervolt, starts from £1,080 + VAT. All prices are subject to VAT; the VAT charged can vary with the job, and the exact figure is confirmed on our written quotation. Every model is listed on our EV charger installation page.

02 Questions from Bromley
EV charger installation,
answered for Bromley.
My flat is in a purpose-built block near Bromley South and I have a numbered bay. Would OZEV pay towards a charger?
It may. OZEV's flats and renters grant pays 75% of the cost, up to £500, and closes on 31 March 2027. You must live in the flat; the bay must be off-street, private, clearly defined and open to you at all times; and you must be the keeper, lessee or named user of an eligible plug-in vehicle, or have one ordered for delivery within three months. Written permission from the freeholder or managing agent, and from your landlord if you rent, has to be in hand before you apply, plus the council's if the building is listed. You apply with our dated quote, nothing is fitted until OZEV confirms you are eligible, and we then claim the grant, which OZEV pays to the installer.
We let flats in a converted house in Bromley. What can a landlord claim?
OZEV's residential landlord grant pays 75% of the cost, up to £500 a socket, for up to 200 sockets a year, until 31 March 2027. Each space must be off-street, private, clearly defined and available to the tenant, the applicant must be registered at Companies House or for VAT, and you cannot claim for a property you live in. Any upgrade to the building's electrical supply has to be done before you apply, so in a converted house the first question is whether each charger can run from that flat's own meter or needs a landlord supply, and whether the incoming cable can carry them all. In 2021, 9.9% of Bromley Town ward's households lived in converted or shared houses.
We park on the road outside our house in Bromley. Can we still charge at home?
Possibly, through the council's footway gully scheme. You pay the London Borough of Bromley £100, non-refundable, to apply, and £699 more if surveys find the footway suitable, £799 in all; the council supplies no charger and reserves no bay. It refuses private roads, cannot fit a gully within 2 metres of a lamp column, through a grass verge or where tree roots would be disturbed, and the cable has to run straight from your house into the gully and on to the car. With that consent, OZEV's on-street grant pays 75% of the cost of the charger, up to £500, until 31 March 2027; cable covers or mats laid on the pavement do not qualify.
Does UK Power Networks have to approve a charger at my Bromley address first?
Not always, and telling them is the installer's job, not yours. The BR1 1AA and BR1 3AA town-centre postcodes are on UK Power Networks' London Power Networks licence, and BR2 7AA in Hayes on its South Eastern licence. If the new load fits within what your supply can carry, the charger goes in and the network is notified afterwards. If it does not, we apply before fitting and they decide whether the supply needs upgrading. For a power cut, ring 105, which is free.
