Bickley EV charger installation

EV Charger Installation in Bickley

In Bickley & Sundridge ward a third of households (33.8%) lived in a detached house at the 2021 Census and 35.5% had two or more cars or vans, so the first question at a Bickley survey is where the cars stand and how far that is from the consumer unit. OZEV's £500-a-socket grants, open until 31 March 2027, cover flat owners, renters, landlords and households with only on-street parking, but not people who own the house they live in and park off the street. BR1 2AA, inside the ward, is on UK Power Networks' London Power Networks licence.

Two cars and a long drive

These Census figures are for Bickley & Sundridge ward, so they include Sundridge. In 2021, 82.4% of the ward’s 7,149 households had a car or van and 35.5% had two or more, well above Bromley’s 30.8%; 17.6% had none (borough 22.9%). Detached houses held 33.8% of households, nearly twice Bromley’s 18.1%, while semi-detached houses held 19.7%, against 29.9% across the borough.

Bromley’s Local Plan describes the Bickley Area of Special Residential Character (ASRC), which runs from the railway south of Bickley Park Road up to Chislehurst Road and from Pines Road east to Station Approach, as essentially spacious inter-war development: large houses in substantial plots. On a plot like that the car may stand at the far end of the drive or beside a detached garage, well away from the consumer unit, with a second car behind it. One 7 kW charger can serve two cars in turn overnight if its lead reaches both charging ports, which is why the Hypervolt’s 5 m, 7.5 m and 10 m lead options matter here. Our guide to choosing a home EV charger explains why the lead is measured before the unit goes on the wall.

Bickley Park, Mavelstone Road and 27 listed entries

Bickley Park (designated 1986, revised 1988) and Mavelstone Road (1987) are the two conservation areas named for Bickley, and both lie entirely within the ward, as do Sundridge Avenue (1988) and Garden Road (1989). Historic England’s list puts 27 entries inside the ward: Sundridge Park at Grade I, Bullers Wood at Grade II* and 25 at Grade II, among them Bickley Court, the Church of St George, Bickley War Memorial and 26 The Avenue.

Bromley council is the planning authority for all four conservation areas and for the ASRC, and fixing a charger to a listed house can need listed building consent. The grant has its own rule here: a renter or flat owner in a listed building must send the council’s written permission with the OZEV application. Mention a listing or a conservation area when you book.

Grants for Bickley’s flats and lets

OZEV’s home chargepoint grants rose to £500 a socket on 1 April 2026 and run until 31 March 2027, but none of them covers a house its owner lives in when it has its own drive. In 2021 three in four of the ward’s households (75.3%) owned their home, against Bromley’s 68.5%, so here the money mainly reaches flats and lets: private renters made up 16.7% of the ward’s households and social renters 7.6%, while 28.2% lived in a flat, about a quarter of those in a converted or shared house.

Flat owners, and tenants of any home except lodgers in the landlord’s own house, can get 75% of the cost, capped at £500, if the home has a private, clearly marked off-street space they can use at all times; written permission from the landlord or freeholder goes in with the application. A landlord registered with Companies House, for VAT or as a social housing provider who lets a Bickley house or flat with its own parking can claim separately, for up to 200 sockets a year. Where a home has only on-street parking, the on-street grant needs a cross-pavement channel approved by the highway authority, which on the borough’s own roads is Bromley council. Whichever grant applies, OZEV confirms eligibility before the charger goes in, and the OZEV-approved installer claims the grant afterwards.

Gas boilers, outdoor earths and London Power Networks

Mains gas alone heated 84.4% of the ward’s households in 2021, so for most Bickley houses a 7 kW charger, drawing close to 32 A for hours at a time, would be the heaviest continuous load the supply carries. The 408 households heated only by electricity need the closest look, since heating and charging want the same night hours.

Valuation Office Agency council-tax records for the 11 Census areas that best fit the ward, a slightly larger patch, count 1,840 of 8,190 dwellings (22.5%) built before 1919, against 17.0% across Bromley, but only 17.1% from 1919 to 1939, against 29.7%. The inter-war ASRC is therefore a pocket, not the pattern of the whole ward. A house’s age says little about its consumer unit, which is why the load and the supply are checked before anything is quoted.

BS 7671 treats a charger serving a car parked down a Bickley drive as an outdoor charging point. If the house has a PME supply, taking its earth from the network’s combined neutral and earth conductor, that earth cannot be used for the charger unless extra protection is added, typically open-PEN protection built into the unit or an earth rod serving only the charging circuit.

BR1 2AA, inside the ward, returns grid supply point group _C, UK Power Networks’ London Power Networks licence, while Orpington (BR6) and West Wickham (BR4) return _J, its South Eastern licence. The installer tells UK Power Networks about each new charger: after the work where the house’s maximum demand leaves room, beforehand by application where it does not.

No drive, or panels already up

A Bickley flat without its own bay, or a house without a drive, falls back on the borough’s public network. Bromley had 225 public chargers on 1 July 2026 in the Department for Transport’s Zapmap-based figures, 18 fewer than on 1 January, which works out at 67.1 per 100,000 residents; London as a whole has 345.1 and England 172.7. There is no count for Bickley alone, and the next release is due on 25 November 2026. Our guide to the benefits of a home EV charger weighs charging at home against that network.

DESNZ counted 4,093 solar PV installations across Bromley at the end of 2025, up from 2,431 five years earlier; there is no ward figure. If panels are already on a Bickley roof, a solar-integrated charger lets the car on the drive take the daytime surplus instead of grid power, and every unit on the price list for our EV charger installation service can be ordered that way.

From our office at 214 Main Road in Biggin Hill, Bickley is 6.2 miles (10 km) almost due north in a straight line; any road route is longer. For other electrical work on the same house, see our electrician in Bickley page.

02 Questions from Bickley

EV charger installation,
answered for Bickley.

We own a detached house in Bickley with a drive and two cars. Is there a grant, and will one charger do?

No grant: OZEV's home schemes leave out a house its owner lives in when it has its own off-street parking. One 7 kW charger can charge two cars in turn if its lead reaches both, which matters in a ward where 35.5% of households ran at least two cars or vans in 2021. The Hypervolt on our price list, with a 5 m, 7.5 m or 10 m lead, starts from £1,080 + VAT. All prices are subject to VAT, which may vary with the job; the exact VAT is confirmed on our written quotation.

I rent a flat in Bickley with an allocated parking bay. Does the £500 OZEV grant apply to me?

Probably, if the bay is off-street, clearly marked as yours and open to you at all times. OZEV pays flat owners and renters 75% of the cost of a charger, capped at £500 a socket, and the scheme closes on 31 March 2027. You also need a car on OZEV's approved list that you own, lease for at least six months, use for work or have on order, and written permission from your landlord or freeholder. OZEV confirms you are eligible first; the charger goes in after that, and we, as an OZEV-approved installer, claim the grant. In 2021, 1,194 of the ward's households rented privately.

Our house is in the Bickley Park conservation area. Can the charger go on the front wall?

Check before anything is fixed. Bromley council is the planning authority for the Bickley Park and Mavelstone Road conservation areas and for the Bickley Area of Special Residential Character, and if the house is also listed (the ward has 27 entries on Historic England's list), fixing a charger to it can need listed building consent. Tell us when you book, so the survey can weigh a side wall or the garage against the front.

Is Bickley on the same electricity network as Orpington, and who tells it about the charger?

Same company, different licence. BR1 2AA, inside Bickley & Sundridge ward, returns grid supply point group _C, UK Power Networks' London Power Networks area; Orpington (BR6) and West Wickham (BR4) return _J, its South Eastern licence. You do not contact the network yourself; the installer does. A charger that fits within the house's existing maximum demand is reported after it goes in, and one that does not needs UK Power Networks' agreement first. For a power cut, the number is 105, free.
