Bickley Battery storage

Battery storage in Bickley

Three in four households in the Bickley & Sundridge ward own their home (75.3%), and a third live in a detached house, almost double the Bromley share, so most battery decisions here start with the household rather than a landlord; in a listed house, or before anything goes on an outside wall in the Bickley Park or Mavelstone Road conservation areas, Bromley's planners come first. We install storage with new panels, or alongside an existing array once its installation and inverter have been surveyed, and the G98 notification or G99 application to UK Power Networks, whose London Power Networks licence covers BR1 2AA, comes as standard. A battery fitted in a Bickley home is charged 0% VAT up to and including 31 March 2027, and 5% from 1 April 2027.

Who decides on a battery in Bickley & Sundridge

Census figures for Bickley come from the Bickley & Sundridge ward, so they take in Sundridge as well. In March 2021, 5,385 of the ward’s 7,149 households owned their home (75.3%, against Bromley’s 68.5%), and 36.8% of all households owned outright, mortgage-free. A third (33.8%) lived in a detached house, nearly twice the borough rate of 18.1%, while semis were rarer than across Bromley (19.7% against 29.9%). For three households in four, then, a battery is their own decision rather than a landlord’s.

Some have someone else to ask. Private tenants (16.7%) and social tenants (7.6%) need their landlord’s agreement. Flats and maisonettes housed 28.2% of the ward’s households, 19.4% in purpose-built blocks and 7.2% in part of a converted or shared house. In a flat the outside walls normally belong to the freeholder, so even an owner should read the lease before picking a wall for storage.

Victorian stock, 1965 to 1982, and protected streets

Council-tax records for the 11 small Census areas that make up the ward on ONS’s lookup, a best fit slightly larger than the ward itself, put 22.5% of the 8,190 dwellings before 1919 (Bromley: 17.0%). Before 1900 is the largest single build period the Valuation Office Agency records here, 1,300 dwellings or roughly one in six (Bromley: 12.1%). Only 17.1% date from 1919 to 1939, against 29.7% across the borough, while 1965 to 1982 accounts for at least 23.7% (Bromley: 16.9%). In a Victorian or Edwardian house, ask about the consumer unit on the same visit as the battery survey.

Bromley’s Local Plan also designates a Bickley Area of Special Residential Character, which takes in Bickley Park Road; the council describes its character as spacious inter-war development, with large houses on substantial plots. On a plot like that, the meter, the fuse board and a sensible wall for storage can be some way apart, so siting and the cable route are settled at survey.

Bickley Park (1986, revised 1988) and Mavelstone Road (1987) are the conservation areas named for Bickley, and both lie entirely within the ward; Sundridge Avenue (1988) and Garden Road (1989), at its Sundridge end, do too. Historic England’s list has 27 entries inside the ward, among them Bickley War Memorial and 26 The Avenue, both Grade II. In any of those conservation areas, check with the London Borough of Bromley before storage, an isolator or cabling is mounted outside; for a listed house, consent can extend to indoor work as well, so say so when booking.

Midday sun, gas-heated evenings

At BR1 2AA, PVGIS credits 4 kWp of unshaded panels facing due south at a 35° pitch with 4,156 kWh a year, most of it produced around the middle of the day. Gas-only central heating serves 84.4% of the ward’s households, so after dark the stored electricity in a typical Bickley home runs the oven, the lights, the appliances and the boiler’s own pump and controls, rather than the heating itself. The 408 households heated by electricity alone (5.7%, against Bromley’s 6.8%) reverse that pattern, needing most in the months when the roof yields least. For an annual use of 2,500 to 2,999 kWh, with the house occupied half the day, the value table below has a 10 kWh battery keeping 2,327 kWh of the roof’s output in the home, against 748 kWh without one; a large detached house may use a good deal more, which is why we quote on your usage profile, time of use and available roof space.

Existing arrays and the BR1 connection rules

DESNZ recorded 4,093 solar PV installations in the London Borough of Bromley by the end of 2025, 68% more than at the end of 2020, but publishes no figure for Bickley itself. Where a Bickley roof already has panels, storage can usually join them without the array being replaced; before we price that, we survey the existing installation and its inverter arrangement to confirm what can safely be integrated. On a bare roof, each system in our solar and battery price guide for Kent and south-east London carries 10kWh of battery capacity, and our home battery storage service explains commissioning and the monitoring app you are given at handover.

Elexon’s lookup returns grid supply point group _C for BR1 2AA, so that part of Bickley is supplied under UK Power Networks’ London Power Networks licence, while the same lookup puts BR4 0AA in West Wickham and BR6 0AA in Orpington under its South Eastern licence. A battery with its own inverter counts as generation, and that inverter’s rating is added to the panels’. If the combined total is no more than 16 A per phase, or 3.68 kW where the house has a single-phase supply, the system connects under G98, with UK Power Networks notified within 28 days of commissioning; beyond that, G99 approval comes before connection. Adding a battery with a separate inverter to an older Bickley array can tip the total into G99, which is why the existing inverter is examined first. DNO G98/G99 paperwork is standard on all our installs.

VAT to 31 March 2027, and Keston to Bickley

Home batteries joined the energy-saving materials in HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6 on 1 February 2024, so a battery installed in a Bickley home is zero-rated whether it arrives with new panels, joins an older array or stands alone: 0% until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027, with your written quotation confirming the rate. Bromley households reach the Warm Homes: Local Grant through the Greater London Authority’s consortium; it pays towards a battery only where solar panels, existing or new, go with it, and only for households passing its tests, which our guide to solar and battery grants in Kent and south-east London explains.

From Glebe Farm Business Park in Keston, where we are based, Bickley is 3.7 miles (6 km) to the north in a straight line, more by road. For any other electrical work on a Bickley home, see our electrician in Bickley page.

02 Questions from Bickley

Battery storage,
answered for Bickley.

Solar panels went on our Bickley roof years ago. Can a battery join them, and who has to be told?

In most cases the panels stay and storage is added, though nothing is priced until we have surveyed the existing installation and how its inverter is set up. UK Power Networks must be told, because a battery with its own inverter adds that inverter's rating to the panels'. At BR1 2AA it operates under its London Power Networks licence: a combined capacity up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW on a single-phase supply) means a G98 notification within 28 days of commissioning, and anything bigger a G99 application approved before connection. We handle both.

Will a battery keep our Bickley home powered during a cut?

Not automatically. When the grid supply fails, a grid-connected battery has to disconnect from the network, and many systems stop supplying the house at the same moment. Backup needs an inverter designed to run selected circuits on their own, wired to suit, so raise it at survey if it matters. With 84.4% of the ward's households heating by mains gas alone, the circuit worth thinking about is the boiler's, because its pump and controls run on electricity. Report the cut itself on 105, a free number.

Our Bickley house is listed, or inside a conservation area. Does that limit where the battery goes?

It can. Before anything is fixed to an outside wall in Bickley Park or Mavelstone Road, or in the Sundridge Avenue and Garden Road conservation areas at the Sundridge end of the ward, ask Bromley's planners. For a listed building (the ward has 27 entries on the National Heritage List, among them 26 The Avenue), listed building consent can cover indoor work too, so tell us when you book. At survey we look at indoor positions first, and at the cable route to the meter and consumer unit, which on the larger plots along Bickley Park Road can be a long one.

Ours is a big detached Bickley house. Will a 10 kWh battery be big enough?

Size follows your usage rather than the floor area. The four systems on our published guide-price list each come with 10kWh of battery capacity, and this page's value table is worked for an annual use of 2,500 to 2,999 kWh. A large detached house can use well beyond that, and so can a home heated by electricity alone, as 408 of the ward's households were in 2021. We confirm the right size at survey, because quotes are built around your usage profile, time of use and available roof space.
