Bromley Battery storage
Battery storage in Bromley
More than half of Bromley Town ward's households live in flats (54.8%), and 12.8% rely on electricity alone for central heating, almost twice the borough share, so a battery here starts with who owns the building and how much power the home uses over a year. We fit batteries with new solar panels, or add one to an array already on the roof after surveying it, and the G98 notification or G99 application to UK Power Networks is included as standard. A battery installed in a home carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% from 1 April 2027.

Electric heat between Bromley North and Bromley South
Bromley Town ward stretches between Bromley North and Bromley South stations, taking in the High Street and Market Square. At the 2021 Census, electricity was the only central heating in 860 of its homes (12.8%), close to twice the borough’s 6.8%, while mains gas alone heated 74.7%, against 82.2% borough-wide.
In a gas-heated home, a battery’s evening work is the lights, the appliances and any electric cooking. In the 860 electrically heated homes, most of the heating load falls between October and March, the months when a south-facing roof gives least, so a battery for one of them is sized from a year of the household’s own bills rather than from a typical-home table.
Owners, landlords and freeholders in Bromley Town
A battery is fixed to a wall and wired into the supply, so the building’s owner decides, and in Bromley Town that is often not the household. 56.2% own their home, against 68.5% across the borough, and 32.6% rent privately, almost double the borough’s 17.4%. 54.8% live in flats, 41.7% in purpose-built blocks, where the roof and outside walls usually belong to a freeholder. Because we fit batteries with solar panels, new or already installed, the first question in a block is whose roof the panels would use. A house, home to 45.2% of the ward’s households, usually has no freeholder above it, though a tenant still needs the landlord’s agreement.
The Bromley Town Centre Conservation Area runs from the High Street and Market Square west along Church Road and Glassmill Lane into the Ravensbourne valley. The council’s appraisal, adopted on 25 June 2025, asks that plant and other equipment be sited to limit its effect on a building’s outside and generally be kept out of view from the public realm, so inside the area a battery, isolator or cable run on a street-facing wall is a question for the council’s planners first. Bromley College and its gateway, in the ward, are listed Grade I, and listed building consent can extend to work indoors.
What 4,156 kWh at BR1 1AA leaves for the evening
At BR1 1AA, inside the ward, PVGIS puts the yearly output of 4 kWp of unshaded panels facing south at 35° at 4,156 kWh, most of it arriving around the middle of the day. The table further down assumes a home using 2,500 to 2,999 kWh a year and empty for half the day. With panels alone it uses 748 kWh of that output; with a 10 kWh battery it uses 2,327 kWh, the 18% and 56% shares in the MCS look-up tables. An electrically heated flat may well use more than that band, and so may a large detached house, so we quote from your usage profile, time of use and available roof space.
UK Power Networks’ October 2026 snapshot counts 147,520 meters in the borough, 99,924 (67.7%) of them smart. A battery can also charge from the grid on a cheaper time-of-use rate, or hold solar output back for the dearest hours, and such tariffs generally need a smart meter. Every guide-priced system we publish includes 10kWh of battery capacity, and our guide to whether solar is worth it in Kent works out what a battery has to cost to pay its way.
Storage for an array already on a Bromley roof
DESNZ counted 4,093 solar PV sites across the whole London Borough of Bromley at the end of 2025, up from 2,431 five years earlier. It publishes no ward figure, so how many of them are in Bromley Town itself is not known. If one is on your roof, a battery can usually be added without replacing the panels: before quoting anything, we survey the existing installation, look at how its inverter is set up and confirm what can be integrated with it safely. How we install battery storage, commissioned by our own engineers with app monitoring set up at handover, has its own page.
From Walter’s Yard to London Power Networks
The council’s 2025 appraisal dates the town centre’s electricity supply to 1898, generated at a power station in Walter’s Yard. Today UK Power Networks runs the network. Elexon’s grid supply point groups put BR1 1AA and BR1 3AA, both in the ward, and BR2 0AA in Shortlands in group _C, the London Power Networks licence; BR2 7AA in Hayes is in _J, the South Eastern licence.
G98 and G99 work the same way under both licences, and a battery counts as generation, so its inverter rating is added to the panels’. The line sits at 16 A per phase, about 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply. At or below it, G98 applies: connect, then notify UK Power Networks within 28 days of commissioning. Above it, a G99 application must be approved before anything is connected. Whichever applies, DNO G98/G99 is included as standard in all our installs.
Zero-rated to 31 March 2027, from an office in the same borough
HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6 has zero-rated electrical storage batteries installed in homes since 1 February 2024, whether fitted with new panels or added to existing ones. A battery installed in a Bromley home therefore carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% from 1 April 2027; the written quotation confirms the rate you pay.
In the London Borough of Bromley, the Warm Homes: Local Grant comes through the Greater London Authority’s consortium. It can fund a battery only alongside new or existing solar panels, and only where the battery cuts the household’s bills. The home must be privately owned or privately let and rated EPC D to G, household income is usually £36,000 or less and, in London, savings must be under £25,000, with some exemptions. With 32.6% of the ward renting privately, note that a landlord may need to pay for part of the work; our guide to solar and battery grants sets out the tests.
Our office at Glebe Farm Business Park, Keston, is 4.1 miles (6.6 km) from Bromley in a straight line, further by road, and both sit in the London Borough of Bromley and the Bromley and Biggin Hill constituency. We are member 00072268 of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code, and TrustMark’s register (licence 2677315) lists our MCS-certified solar PV trade. For other work on a Bromley home’s wiring, see our electrician in Bromley page.

02 Questions from Bromley
Battery storage,
answered for Bromley.
I rent a flat near Bromley South that is heated only by electricity. Could I have a battery?
Only with your landlord's agreement, and in a block usually the freeholder's as well, because a battery and its cabling are fixed to the building. We fit batteries with solar panels, new or already installed, so the next question is whose roof would carry the panels. If the answer is yes, bring a year of bills: yours is one of 860 households in Bromley Town ward heated by electricity alone, and it may well use more than the 2,500 to 2,999 kWh a year behind our value table.
Will a battery keep my Bromley house running in a power cut?
Not automatically. Many home batteries shut down with the grid, and keeping chosen circuits live needs an inverter and wiring designed for it, so whether yours can is something to settle at the survey, before you buy. For the 74.7% of Bromley Town households whose only central heating is mains gas, the boiler's pump and controls need electricity too, so ask whether the heating circuit could be included. Report the cut itself on 105, which is free.
Our Shortlands house already has solar panels. Does a battery mean more paperwork with UK Power Networks?
Yes, because a battery counts as generation alongside the panels already connected. BR2 0AA in Shortlands, like BR1 1AA in the town centre, is on the London Power Networks licence that UK Power Networks runs. If panels and battery together stay at or under 16 A per phase (3.68 kW on a single-phase supply), G98 applies and UK Power Networks is notified within 28 days of commissioning; above that, a G99 application must be approved before connection. We survey your array and inverter before quoting, and the G98 or G99 step is included.
Our house is in the Bromley Town Centre Conservation Area. Can the battery go on an outside wall?
Ask the London Borough of Bromley before anything is fixed outside. The conservation area runs west from the High Street into the Ravensbourne valley, taking in Church Road, Glassmill Lane, Queen's Mead Road and Martins Hill, and its appraisal, adopted on 25 June 2025, asks that plant and other equipment generally be kept out of view from the public realm. An indoor position avoids most of the planning question, though if the building is listed, consent may be needed for indoor work as well. The survey is the time to compare positions.
