Chislehurst Battery storage
Battery storage in Chislehurst
In Chislehurst West & Elmstead the mean domestic meter used 4,885 kWh in 2024, more than in all but one of Bromley's 39 middle-layer census areas, while Chislehurst North's averaged 3,566 kWh, so a Chislehurst battery is sized from your own bills rather than a local average. It can go in with new panels, or usually be added to an existing BR7 array once we have surveyed the installation and its inverter, and we file the G98 notice or G99 application with UK Power Networks. Batteries installed in homes carry VAT at 0% until 31 March 2027; on 1 April 2027 the rate becomes 5%.

Two Chislehurst meter averages, 1,319 kWh apart
DESNZ’s 2024 figures split Chislehurst’s two best-fit census areas. The 4,537 domestic meters in Chislehurst West & Elmstead (MSOA Bromley 007) averaged 4,885 kWh, a mean beaten by only one of Bromley’s other 38 middle-layer census areas. In Chislehurst North (Bromley 002), 3,137 meters averaged 3,566 kWh, close to the borough’s 3,488.
The housing differs as much. Half of West & Elmstead’s households (50.9%) lived in a detached house at the 2021 Census, against one in ten (10.1%) in Chislehurst North, where semis (35.6%) and terraces (33.2%) housed most families. The value table further down assumes yearly use of 2,500 to 2,999 kWh. That brackets Chislehurst North’s median meter (2,720 kWh) but not West & Elmstead’s (3,443 kWh), so a large West & Elmstead house is sized from its own meter readings and hours of use, not from the table.
84.9% on mains gas: what a Chislehurst battery runs after dark
At the 2021 Census, mains gas was the only central heating in 84.9% of the ward’s households, slightly above Bromley’s 82.2%. In those homes a battery charged at midday mostly runs the evening’s lighting and appliances, any electric cooking, and the boiler’s pump and controls, rather than the heating itself. PVGIS models 4,178 kWh a year from an unshaded, south-facing 4 kWp array here, most of it generated in the middle of the day. Electric-only homes, 5.4% of the ward against 6.8% across Bromley, are the harder case: they draw most in the dark months, when a BR7 roof produces least.
That boiler is also why backup comes up. In a power cut, a battery keeps circuits live only if the system is designed and wired with a backup supply, so say at survey if it matters and check that the written quotation states whether yours will.
Panels already on a BR7 roof
DESNZ counted 4,093 solar PV sites across the London Borough of Bromley at the end of 2025, against 2,431 five years before; its table stops at the borough, so there is no Chislehurst line. A battery can usually be added to an existing array without replacing the panels. We survey the installation and its inverter arrangement first, and quote once we know what can be integrated safely. Commissioning and the monitoring app are covered on our battery storage installation page. For a roof with no panels yet, our solar and battery prices for Kent and south-east London list four systems, each with 10kWh of battery capacity, with their conditions.
Paperwork on UK Power Networks’ London licence
BR7 6AA in Chislehurst North and BR7 5NA in West & Elmstead, both inside the ward, sit in grid supply point group _C, which UK Power Networks serves under its London Power Networks licence. Storage counts towards the same total as the panels. A combined total within 16 A per phase (3.68 kW on a single-phase supply) means G98: the system goes in and UK Power Networks receives notice within 28 days of commissioning. Anything larger means G99, and the network’s approval has to come before connection. A second inverter for a battery beside an existing array can push a G98 house over that line, which is why the inverter check comes first; the notice or application is filed for you either way. Cuts on this network are reported free on 105.
Owners, tenants, flats and the 1971 conservation area
Owner-occupiers held 4,829 of the ward’s 6,268 households at the 2021 Census (77.0%, against Bromley’s 68.5%), rising to 80.7% in West & Elmstead. The 945 privately renting and 447 socially renting households need their landlord’s agreement first. In purpose-built flats (18.6% of households), part of a converted or shared house (4.3%) and the 70 households living in a commercial building, the lease and the freeholder also decide what can be fixed to the structure.
Where the battery goes matters too. One fitted inside the house doesn’t normally need planning permission; one mounted outside, or a new enclosure for it, may change how the house looks. The Chislehurst Conservation Area dates from 1971 in Historic England’s records, 60 National Heritage List entries (four of them Grade II*) fall inside the ward, and Bromley lists an Article 4 direction for Kemnal Road, Chislehurst. Listed building consent isn’t limited to the outside of a listed house, so the cable route and battery position need checking too. Look the address up on Bromley’s interactive map first; our guide to planning permission for solar panels in Kent and Bromley has a section on batteries.
A Chislehurst quotation either side of 1 April 2027
Batteries fitted in homes joined the zero rate in HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6 on 1 February 2024, including ones added to existing panels or fitted on their own. The rate stays at 0% until 31 March 2027 and becomes 5% on 1 April 2027, and your written quotation confirms which applies. If you want the zero rate, leave time for the survey, any conservation-area or listing check and, for a larger system, G99 approval. The Warm Homes: Local Grant reaches Bromley through the Greater London Authority’s consortium and can fund a battery for eligible low-income households, but only alongside new or existing panels; our solar and battery grants guide for Kent and south-east London sets out who qualifies.
Chislehurst lies 4.7 miles (7.5 km) in a straight line from our Keston office on Westerham Road, and the drive is longer. Emergency call-outs, EICRs and EV chargers in BR7 are covered on our electrician in Chislehurst page.

02 Questions from Chislehurst
Battery storage,
answered for Chislehurst.
Our detached house in Chislehurst West uses well over 4,000 kWh a year. Is a 10 kWh battery the right size?
It might be, but we won't assume so. Each guide-priced system we publish has 10kWh of battery capacity, and the worked figures on this page assume yearly use of 2,500 to 2,999 kWh, while Chislehurst West & Elmstead's meters averaged 4,885 kWh in 2024. Your bills and the hours you use power decide the size of the battery and of the array charging it, and the written quotation sets out the system we propose.
Our Chislehurst North semi has had panels for a few years. Can storage be added, and what does UK Power Networks need from us?
Storage can usually join an existing array once the survey has checked the installation and its inverter, and we deal with the network for you. In ward postcodes such as BR7 6AA that is UK Power Networks' London Power Networks licence, and storage counts towards the same total as the panels. Up to 16 A per phase (3.68 kW if the supply is single-phase), a G98 notice goes in within 28 days of commissioning; beyond that, G99 approval is needed before the battery is connected.
If the power goes off in BR7, does a battery keep the boiler and lights on?
Not automatically. A battery connected to the grid has to stop exporting to the network during a cut, and many systems switch off entirely; only those designed and wired with a backup supply keep selected circuits running. Tell us at survey if that matters, and check that your written quotation says whether the proposed system does it. It is a fair question here: mains gas was the only central heating in 84.9% of the ward's households at the 2021 Census, and a boiler's pump and controls need electricity. Report cuts free on 105.
We rent privately in Chislehurst. Is a battery possible?
With your landlord's agreement, yes, since a battery is fixed to the building and connected to its supply. 945 of the ward's 6,268 households rented privately at the 2021 Census. If your household's income is low and the home is rated EPC D to G, the Warm Homes: Local Grant, delivered in Bromley through the Greater London Authority's consortium, may help, but it covers a battery only alongside new or existing solar panels, and your landlord may have to contribute.
