Petts Wood Battery storage
Battery storage in Petts Wood
Petts Wood is a suburb of owner-occupied, gas-heated houses: 83.8% of Petts Wood & Knoll ward's households own their home and 86.7% heat it with mains gas alone, so the decision usually rests with the owner, and a battery carries lights and appliances into the evening rather than heating the house. We install storage with new panels, or beside an array already on the roof once its inverter has been surveyed, and send UK Power Networks the G98 notification or G99 application; 12 of the 14 BR5 1 postcodes we checked sit on its South Eastern licence alone. Petts Wood homeowners pay 0% VAT on a battery fitted in their home until 31 March 2027, and 5% from 1 April 2027.

Gas heats the house, the battery runs the evening
Mains gas and nothing else heated 5,988 homes in Petts Wood & Knoll ward at the 2021 Census, 86.7% of all 6,910 households; just 311 (4.5%) relied on electricity alone. In Bromley 025, the eastern part that the House of Commons Library calls Petts Wood, gas-only homes reach 89.8%, against 82.2% across Bromley. In most Petts Wood houses, then, electricity stored at midday is spent on lights and appliances after dark rather than on heating, and the boiler draws only what its pump, fan and controls need.
That boiler is why power cuts belong in the survey conversation. A grid-tied battery must disconnect when UK Power Networks’ supply fails, so keeping the boiler running through a cut needs an inverter with a backup output and the chosen circuits wired to it.
July and December on a Petts Wood roof
On the EU’s PVGIS model, 4 kWp of unshaded panels facing south at 35° on a Petts Wood roof make 4,174 kWh in an average year. The months are far apart: about 517 kWh in July, nearly 16.7 kWh a day and more than a 10 kWh battery holds, and about 142 kWh in December, roughly 4.6 kWh a day, under half of it. The table further down runs that roof against an assumed use of 2,500 to 2,999 kWh a year: with a 10 kWh battery the house uses 2,337 kWh of the output itself, against 751 kWh without one.
The ward’s 311 electrically heated households need most in the months the roof gives least, which is one reason every system we quote is designed around your own consumption rather than an average.
Joining an array that is already up
DESNZ’s local-authority count reached 4,093 solar PV sites in Bromley by the close of 2025, from 2,431 five years earlier, with no separate line for Petts Wood. Semi-detached houses are home to 45.6% of the ward’s households, so if one of those arrays is on your half of a Petts Wood semi, the panels can usually stay: before any quote, we survey the installation, look at how its inverter is set up and confirm which parts can safely be integrated. On a bare roof, panels and storage go in as one job, and every guide-priced system comes with 10kWh of battery capacity; the prices are in our solar panel and battery cost guide. Commissioning, and the app that shows what the battery stores and uses, are explained on our battery storage installation service page.
Owners, landlords and the outside wall
Because storage is fixed to the fabric of the house and wired into the consumer unit, the owner decides, and Petts Wood & Knoll is a ward of owners: 83.8% of households, 44.5% outright, against 68.5% across Bromley, and 89.6% in Bromley 025. Tenants are the exception: 835 households rent privately and 260 from social landlords, and for them the landlord’s say comes first, while the 137 whose home is in a commercial building, a census heading that covers flats above shops, may need a freeholder’s agreement too.
Where the battery and its isolator go is settled at the survey, and in Petts Wood the look of the street is protected. Bromley’s Local Plan dates the original plans for Petts Wood to the late 1920s and early 1930s, and the Valuation Office counts 2,140 of the 3,070 homes in Bromley 025 as built between 1930 and 1939. The Petts Wood Area of Special Residential Character takes in some 1,500 houses, all detached or semi-detached, over roughly 112 hectares, and the council’s Article 4 directions there remove permitted development rights for roof additions and alterations, extra storeys, and gates, fences and walls; none deals with batteries. The Chenies, Chislehurst Road and Station Square are conservation areas as well, and Bromley’s interactive map tells you whether a property falls in one. A battery indoors does not normally count as development, but one on an outside wall may change how the house looks, so check with Bromley before anything goes on the wall; our planning guide for Kent and Bromley has a section on batteries.
South Eastern Power Networks and the 16 A line
In Elexon’s grid supply point groups, the Station Square postcode BR5 1LZ sits in _J alone, UK Power Networks’ South Eastern licence, as do 11 of the other 13 BR5 1 postcodes we looked up; BR5 1AA and BR5 1AQ also map to _C, the London licence, and G98 and G99 work the same way under either. Storage counts as generation alongside any panels. Panels and battery together at or below 16 A per phase (3.68 kW where the house has one phase) connect under G98, with notice to UK Power Networks due within 28 days of commissioning; anything above waits for UK Power Networks to approve a G99 application. Adding a battery and its inverter to panels already on the roof can take the total past 16 A, so the route is settled at survey, and the G98 notification or G99 application comes as standard with every install we do.
Zero-rated until 31 March 2027, 3.4 miles from Keston
Under HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6, a battery fitted in a Petts Wood home has carried no VAT since 1 February 2024, whether it is added to panels already on the roof or fitted with new ones. That 0% rate lasts until 31 March 2027 and rises to 5% on 1 April 2027, and your written quotation states the rate that applies. Bromley belongs to the Greater London Authority’s consortium for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which can fund a battery only where panels, new or existing, go with it and it lowers the household’s bills. The home must be privately owned and rated EPC D to G, and the household must pass the income test and London’s savings test; our solar and battery grants page has the figures.
From our office on Westerham Road in Keston, Petts Wood is 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the north-north-east in a straight line, and further by road. Consumer unit work the survey may call for before a battery connects, and our other electrical services in the town, are on our electrician in Petts Wood page.

02 Questions from Petts Wood
Battery storage,
answered for Petts Wood.
Panels already cover part of our Petts Wood roof. Can a battery be added, and does UK Power Networks need telling?
Usually yes to both. The array can normally stay, but nothing is quoted until we have surveyed it and checked how its inverter is arranged. Panels and storage are counted together as generation: at 16 A per phase or less (3.68 kW for a house with one phase), UK Power Networks is notified under G98 after commissioning; above that, it must approve a G99 application before anything connects. Twelve of the 14 BR5 1 postcodes we checked sit on its South Eastern licence alone and the other two on both its South Eastern and London licences, and the G98 and G99 rules are the same on either.
If the power goes off in Petts Wood, will a battery keep our gas boiler going?
Only if it is built to. A battery connected to the grid must disconnect when the supply fails, and many go off with it; powering chosen circuits through a cut takes an inverter with an emergency or backup output and circuits wired to it. In a ward where 86.7% of households heat with mains gas alone, that matters, because a gas boiler's pump, fan and controls stop when the electricity does. Say at the survey if backup is a priority, and report any cut on 105, a free call.
Our house is in the Petts Wood ASRC. Can the battery go on an outside wall?
Ask Bromley before anything is fixed outside. The council's Article 4 directions for the Petts Wood Area of Special Residential Character remove permitted development rights for roof additions and alterations, extra storeys, and gates, fences and walls. None of them deals with batteries, so they do not settle the question for a wall-mounted battery or isolator either way. If the address is also in The Chenies, Chislehurst Road or Station Square conservation area, Bromley's interactive map will show it, and a lawful development certificate puts an answer in writing. A battery inside the house does not normally need permission, and both positions are weighed at the survey.
Will a 10 kWh battery fill up from a Petts Wood roof in winter?
Not on an average December day. PVGIS gives an unshaded 4 kWp south-facing array here about 142 kWh that month, roughly 4.6 kWh a day, against about 517 kWh in July, nearly 16.7 kWh a day. Winter evenings will draw more from the grid, most of all in the 311 ward households heated by electricity alone. Our guide-priced systems all carry 10kWh of storage, but your quotation is built on your usage profile, when you use power and the roof space you have.
