Croydon Battery storage
Battery storage in Croydon
At the 2021 Census, 71.3% of central Croydon households lived in a flat and 33.8% owned their home, so a battery here often begins with a landlord's or freeholder's consent; in Park Hill & Lloyd Park, 50.2% owned. We fit batteries with new panels or, after a survey, alongside panels you already have, and the G98 or G99 step with UK Power Networks comes included. In a home, a battery carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%.

Flats, freeholders and a third who own
Every central Croydon figure on this page sums six census areas (MSOAs) in and around the town centre, Park Hill & Lloyd Park and Addiscombe West among them; Purley and Coulsdon lie outside them. Of their 25,790 households in 2021, 33.8% owned their home, against 54.7% across the borough, and 71.3% lived in a flat, maisonette or apartment, 14,162 of them in purpose-built blocks. In Fairfield, the town-centre ward that takes in Church Street, Wellesley Road and the Minster, owners fell to 22.4% and private renters reached 57.9%.
A battery is a permanent fixture on a home’s supply, and we pair it with solar panels, new or already installed. So for most central households the first conversation is with a landlord or freeholder: which wall, which cable route, and whose roof the panels would use. The Central Croydon MSOA (Croydon 046) is the sharpest case: 79.8% of its households lived in purpose-built flats in 2021, the highest share of the six areas, and the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) dates 4,850 of its 6,840 domestic properties (70.9%) to 2010 or later.
Park Hill houses and Addiscombe’s Victorian grid
Ownership and houses concentrate in Park Hill & Lloyd Park, where 50.2% of 2,942 households owned their home in 2021 and one in five (20.8%) had a detached house, against 5.0% across all six areas. St Bernards, a section of the Park Hill Estate completed in 1971 to a design by the Swiss firm Atelier 5, has been a conservation area since October 2008; there, ask the London Borough of Croydon before mounting anything on an outside wall.
Addiscombe West has the oldest stock of the six: the VOA dates 3,160 of its 6,100 properties (51.8%) to before 1919, and the East India Estate conservation area, a grid of Victorian streets laid out on the land of the East India Company’s former military academy, lies within it. Nearly one household in five there (19.2%) lived in part of a converted or shared house in 2021: the Victorian house split into flats, where the freeholder question from the town-centre blocks comes up again.
Arrays already up, and panels still to come
By the end of 2025 the London Borough of Croydon had 5,161 solar PV sites on DESNZ’s count, against 3,187 five years before. Where your house already has one of them, a battery can usually join it without the panels being replaced: we survey the installation and its inverter arrangement first, and confirm what can be integrated safely before giving a price. How the system is installed, commissioned and handed over is set out on our battery storage service page.
New panels are the harder route in the Chatsworth Road conservation area, an area of large Victorian and Edwardian houses close to the town centre in Fairfield ward. An Article 4 Direction in force since 21 January 2016 removes permitted development rights for houses across the whole area, solar panels and all roof alterations included, so planning permission must come before the array.
A CR0 roof’s 4,104 kWh, and who uses it after dark
For a 4 kWp array on an unshaded south-facing roof pitched at 35°, PVGIS puts the long-term output at CR0 1AA at 4,104 kWh a year; your own roof’s direction and shading will move that. For a home using 2,500–2,999 kWh a year, the value table below shows a 10 kWh battery roughly tripling how much of that output is used in the house, by holding daytime generation for the evening. All four of our guide-priced systems carry 10kWh of battery capacity, and our solar and battery cost guide lists them with their conditions.
Car ownership is the other local variable. In 2021, 52.1% of central Croydon households had no car or van, against 33.6% across the borough and 23.5% in England. For the 47.9% with one, an electric car charged at home can take annual use well outside the table’s band, so the battery is sized on your own bills.
South Eastern Power Networks, power cuts and the VAT date
Croydon is a London borough, yet the Elexon lookup puts CR0 1AA and CR0 1NX, both in Fairfield ward, in group _J: UK Power Networks’ South Eastern Power Networks licence, where Bromley town centre (BR1 1AA) sits in group _C on its London Power Networks licence. A Croydon battery’s G98 notification or G99 application goes to the South Eastern network, the thresholds are set out in the questions below, and whichever form applies is included as standard in all our installs. The same network answers power cuts on 105, a free call.
Under HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6, a battery installed in a home has been zero-rated since 1 February 2024, whether it joins one of the borough’s 5,161 arrays or comes with new panels. The 0% rate ends after 31 March 2027 and 5% applies from 1 April 2027; your written quotation confirms the VAT for your job. Our guide to solar and battery grants covers the schemes that might help a household.
Our office at Glebe Farm Business Park, Keston, is 6 miles (9.7 km) from central Croydon in a straight line; by road it is further. Wiring jobs beyond the battery, from a Fairfield flat to an Addiscombe conversion, are on our electrician in Croydon page.

02 Questions from Croydon
Battery storage,
answered for Croydon.
I live in a flat in a central Croydon block. Who has to agree to a battery?
As a leaseholder, usually your freeholder or managing agent; as a tenant, your landlord first. A battery is fixed into the building's wiring, its cable route may cross parts of the block that no single flat owns, and the panels it pairs with need a roof that seldom belongs to one lease. You would be far from alone: 14,162 central Croydon households lived in purpose-built blocks in 2021, and in the Central Croydon MSOA itself (Croydon 046) 79.8% of households did.
Our Addiscombe house already has solar panels. What does a battery change with UK Power Networks?
Mainly the connection paperwork. Storage counts alongside generation, so your existing panels and the proposed battery are added together. At or under 16 A per phase (3.68 kW on a single-phase supply), G98 applies and UK Power Networks is notified within 28 days of commissioning; above that, it must accept a G99 application before connection. The panels can usually stay: we check the inverter arrangement before quoting, and either form is included as standard. In Addiscombe West, where 19.2% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house in 2021, the survey also settles which meter and consumer unit the array feeds when a house has been split into flats.
If the power goes off in central Croydon, will a battery keep my home running?
Only if the system is built for backup. A grid-connected battery normally shuts down along with the network, and keeping chosen circuits powered through an outage needs an inverter that offers backup and wiring designed for it, so it is a question for the survey, not an assumption. With 71.3% of central Croydon households in flats, the common parts matter too: lifts and stair lighting usually run from the landlord's supply, beyond your battery's reach. Report the cut on 105, a free call; CR0 1AA is in UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks area.
We live in the Chatsworth Road Conservation Area. Can we have panels and a battery?
The panels need planning permission first. A non-immediate Article 4 Direction in force from 21 January 2016 removes permitted development rights for houses across the whole conservation area, covering solar PV and all roof alterations, so the London Borough of Croydon must grant consent before an array goes up. Where panels are already on the roof, a battery can usually join them without the array being replaced. Before mounting a battery on an outside wall, ask the council.
