West Wickham Battery storage

Battery storage in West Wickham

At the 2021 Census, 85.9% of West Wickham ward's households heated with mains gas alone and 84.3% owned their home, so a battery here is usually the owner's decision, and its job is the evening electricity load rather than the heating. We install one with new panels or, after surveying the inverter set-up, beside panels already on the roof, and handle the G98 notification or G99 application with UK Power Networks. Batteries installed in West Wickham homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%.

What storage does in a mostly gas-heated ward

Roughly six households in every seven in West Wickham ward heated their homes with mains gas and nothing else at the 2021 Census: 85.9%, or 4,905, against 82.2% for Bromley as a whole. In those homes a battery works on the electricity bill, not the heating. PVGIS models an unshaded, south-facing 4 kWp roof here at 4,128 kWh a year, but the year is lopsided: about 509 kWh in July and 141 in December. A battery carries a summer afternoon’s surplus into the evening; in midwinter there is far less surplus to carry.

The worked example further down shows a 10 kWh battery taking the home’s own use of that output from under a fifth to over half, for a household using 2,500 to 2,999 kWh a year. Plenty of West Wickham homes will use more. The ward’s 323 households on electric-only central heating are one group. Households that start charging a car at home are another, and this is a ward of drivers: 85.5% of households had a car or van in 2021, 41.8% had two or more, and 11.5% had three or more, against 7.9% across Bromley. Either way, we size the battery from your own usage profile and time of use.

At the 2021 Census nearly half the ward’s households, 47.3%, lived in a semi-detached house, well above the borough’s 29.9%, and 82.9% lived in a whole house of some kind. Most owned it: 84.3% of 5,709 households, 44.9% outright, where Bromley overall stood at 68.5% and 33.0%. A battery and its inverter are fixed to the house and wired into its electrical installation, so in most West Wickham homes the person who books the survey is the person who decides.

Tenants, the 10.6% of households renting privately and 4.7% from a social landlord, need the landlord’s agreement first. In a purpose-built flat, home to 12.6% of households, or for the 123 households living in a commercial building, such as a flat over a shop, the freeholder may need to agree as well.

The houses are mostly from one decade. Bromley 030, the ONS middle-layer area that lies wholly inside the ward and holds eight of its ten LSOAs, had 5,050 homes on the Valuation Office Agency’s count at 31 March 2026, and 3,310 of them, 65.5%, were built between 1930 and 1939, against 25.6% across Bromley; only 130 predate 1919. The build date says nothing about the consumer unit or wiring a particular house has today, which is why we survey before we quote.

An array that is already on the roof

Solar is counted by borough, not ward: DESNZ recorded 4,093 solar PV installations across Bromley at the end of 2025, against 2,431 at the end of 2020, totalling 19.6 MW. If one of them is on your West Wickham roof, it normally stays. We look over the existing installation and its inverter set-up, establish what storage can safely be integrated with it, and only then put a price on paper. Commissioning and app monitoring are covered on our page about how we install battery storage.

On a bare roof, both go in as one job; every system in our published guide pricing carries 10kWh of storage, and our page on what panels and a battery cost together lists those prices with their conditions.

SPN paperwork for a BR4 battery

BR4 0AA, the West Wickham postcode we checked, sits in grid supply point group _J, which belongs to UK Power Networks’ South Eastern licence, even though the ward is in a London borough; the Beckenham postcode we checked is on the company’s London licence. The paperwork is identical. The network operator treats storage as generation, so a battery with its own inverter is added to the panels’ capacity. If the total stays at or under 16 A per phase, about 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, the system is a G98 connection: fitted first, then notified within 28 days of commissioning. Above that, a G99 application has to be made and approved before the system is connected. Adding an AC-coupled battery to a G98-sized West Wickham array can therefore tip the house into G99. Either route is part of our standard install.

Flood Zones 2 and 3, and the seven listed entries

The Environment Agency’s river Flood Zones 2 and 3 reach into parts of the ward, mostly along its western edge, so whether they affect you comes down to your address. The Flood Map for Planning answers that for a single property. If yours is in Zone 2 or 3, tell us when you book, because the battery’s position is set by the manufacturer’s installation instructions and a garage or ground-floor wall in a flood zone is worth raising before that choice is made.

The ward has no conservation area, but seven of its entries are on Historic England’s list, every one Grade II, with Glebe House, Oak Lodge and 25 Corkscrew Hill among them. If you live in a listed building, ask Bromley’s planners about listed building consent for the battery and its cable runs before booking the work.

The VAT end date and the GLA’s grant

Fitted in a West Wickham home, a battery carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027; on 1 April 2027 the rate becomes 5%. HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6 has covered batteries installed in homes since 1 February 2024, whether they arrive with new panels or join an existing array. Because West Wickham is in a London borough, the grant route runs through the Greater London Authority’s Warm Homes: Local Grant, which pays for a battery only alongside new or existing panels and only for households that qualify; the income, savings and EPC tests are set out in our grants guide.

Keston, where we are based at Glebe Farm Business Park, is in Bromley too, 2.8 miles (4.6 km) from West Wickham in a straight line. Every Census figure above is for West Wickham ward, so it leaves out some BR4 9 postcodes, Wickham Court’s included, that belong to Hayes & Coney Hall ward. Other work on the house’s wiring is covered by our electrician in West Wickham page.

02 Questions from West Wickham

Battery storage,
answered for West Wickham.

Our West Wickham semi already has solar panels. Can a battery be added without replacing them?

Normally, yes, and the existing array stays. We look over the installation and its inverter set-up and establish what storage can safely be integrated before giving you a price. A battery adds to the capacity UK Power Networks counts, so panels notified under G98 can need a G99 application, made before the battery is connected; we handle it either way. Installed in your home, the battery is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies from 1 April 2027.

When the power goes off in BR4, does a battery keep the house going?

Only where the system is built for it. For safety, a grid-tied inverter must shut down when the network fails, so supply during a cut needs backup-capable equipment and wiring, sometimes covering a few chosen circuits rather than the whole house. Whether the system you have in mind can do that is something we confirm at survey, not promise up front. To report the cut, call 105, which is free; for a BR4 0AA address it reaches UK Power Networks.

Our West Wickham home has electric heating rather than gas. Will the battery be sized differently?

Yes. Only 323 of the ward's households (5.7%) had electric-only central heating in 2021, and the worked example on this page, built on 2,500 to 2,999 kWh of annual use, doesn't describe your home. Electric heating adds demand mostly in winter, when PVGIS gives a 4 kWp West Wickham roof about 141 kWh in December against 509 in July, so we work from your own bills, usage profile and time of use and size the battery from those.

Can a West Wickham household get a grant towards a battery?

A few can; most can't. Bromley's route is the Greater London Authority's Warm Homes: Local Grant, which may pay for a battery only if new or existing solar panels go with it. The home must be privately owned and rated EPC D to G, household income is usually £36,000 or less, and in London household savings must also be under £25,000, with some exemptions. Everyone else pays 0% VAT on a home battery until 31 March 2027.
