Orpington Battery storage

Battery storage in Orpington

Mains gas is the only central heating in 84.7% of Orpington ward's households, so a battery here mostly runs the lights, appliances and any electric cooking after dark, while the ward's 260 electric-only homes need one sized from their own winter use. We fit a battery with new panels, or add one to an existing array once a survey has checked its inverter, and the G98 notification or G99 application to UK Power Networks is part of the job. VAT on a battery fitted in a home is 0% until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027.

Gas heat, electric evenings

At the 2021 Census, mains gas was the only central heating in 4,010 of Orpington ward’s 4,734 households, 84.7%, against Bromley’s 82.2%. In those homes the boiler draws electricity only for its pump and controls, so what a battery stores at midday goes on the lights, the fridge, the television and any electric oven in the evening, not on warmth.

The ward’s 260 electric-only households (5.5%, against 6.8% borough-wide) are a different case: their demand is heavier and peaks in winter, when an Orpington roof makes least. An electric car moves a household towards that group, and 79.3% of the ward’s households had at least one car or van in 2021. So we quote from your usage profile, time of use and roof space, not from a ward average.

A modelled 4,172 kWh to work with

PVGIS, the EU Joint Research Centre’s model, puts an unshaded, south-facing 4 kWp array at 35° on an Orpington roof at 4,172 kWh in an average year, most of it made around the middle of the day. The value table further down runs that figure through the MCS self-consumption tables for one household type, with and without a 10 kWh battery. Our solar panel and battery price guide builds its worked example, payback included, around an Orpington home.

Semis, owners and the flats over shops

Semi-detached houses held 47.8% of the ward’s households, against 29.9% across Bromley; detached houses had 21.4% and terraces 10.9%. Most homes were owner-occupied: 3,379 households, 71.5%, and 1,870 of them, 39.5%, owned outright, where the borough figure is 33.0%. For most of those owners a battery is their own decision, and where it goes, inside or out, is settled at the survey.

Tenants start with the landlord: 750 households (15.9%, against Bromley’s 13.2%) rented from a housing association, another social landlord or the council, and 557 rented privately. And 113 households lived in a flat inside a commercial building, 2.4% of the ward and nearly twice the borough’s 1.3%, where the freeholder’s consent normally comes first.

Consumer units from the 1930s on

The Valuation Office Agency’s Council Tax list is a separate count: 5,740 properties across the eight small areas ONS assigns to the ward, each area’s figures rounded to the nearest 10. It dates 1,860 of them to the 1930s and 2,050 to 1945–1972, with 950 (16.6%) built from 2000 on, against 10.8% across Bromley. A battery connects through the consumer unit, and in a house approaching its centenary that board may have been changed several times or not at all, so the survey checks it before anything is quoted. If it needs replacing first, that work is on our consumer unit upgrades page.

Joining panels already on a BR6 roof

DESNZ gives no figure for Orpington alone, but across the London Borough of Bromley it counted 4,093 solar PV sites at the end of 2025, 1,662 more than at the end of 2020. Adding storage to one of them usually leaves the array in place: we survey the existing installation, check how its inverter is arranged and confirm what can be joined to it safely before quoting. Installation, commissioning by our own electricians and the monitoring app are set out on our home battery storage page.

UK Power Networks’ South Eastern licence

The Octopus Energy lookup of Elexon’s grid supply point groups puts BR6 0TW, BR6 9AA and BR6 0LS, all inside the ward, in group _J: UK Power Networks’ South Eastern Power Networks licence. A battery counts towards the same generation total as the panels. The dividing line is 16 A per phase, roughly 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply: at or under it, the system connects under G98 and UK Power Networks is told within 28 days of commissioning, while above it a G99 application must be approved first. A battery with its own inverter can take an existing array over that line, so the survey decides the route, and the notification or application is included. Whether a battery keeps any circuits live in a power cut depends on its design, which the survey confirms rather than assumes; report a cut free on 105.

The Priory, VAT and the trip from Keston

About 87% of The Priory, Orpington conservation area, designated by Bromley on 14 May 1985, lies inside the ward. Five National Heritage List entries stand within it: the Grade II* Priory and Church of All Saints and, at Grade II, Barn Hawe, the Priory’s outbuildings and two garden walls north of it. Listed building consent can reach interior work, so in a listed house agree the battery’s position and cable route with Bromley first.

HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6 has zero-rated batteries installed in homes since 1 February 2024, whether fitted with new panels or added to old ones; that 0% rate runs to 31 March 2027, and 5% applies from 1 April 2027. Bromley’s Warm Homes: Local Grant, delivered through the Greater London Authority, is aimed at low-income households in homes rated D to G, and it funds a battery only alongside new or existing panels; our solar and battery grants guide explains who qualifies. Our office at Glebe Farm Business Park, Keston sits 3.3 miles (5.3 km) south-west of Orpington as the crow flies, further by road. Other electrical work in the town is on our electrician in Orpington page.

02 Questions from Orpington

Battery storage,
answered for Orpington.

Our 1930s semi in Orpington has no panels yet. Should the battery go in at the same time?

Our guide prices assume it does: every system on the list pairs the panels with 10kWh of battery capacity, with scaffolding, the G98/G99 paperwork and MCS certification included as standard. Whether that size suits you comes out of the survey, which works from your usage profile, time of use and roof space. In a house from the 1930s, the decade the Council Tax list gives for 1,860 of the 5,740 properties in the ward's small areas, the survey also checks the consumer unit the battery will connect to.

Panels went on our Orpington house a few years ago. Does a battery mean telling UK Power Networks again?

Yes. The connection rules treat a battery as generation, so its capacity is added to the panels' and the total sets the route. Up to 16 A per phase, about 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, it is a G98 notification within 28 days of commissioning; above that, a G99 application has to be approved before connection. BR6 9AA and the other ward postcodes we checked are on UK Power Networks' South Eastern licence. We survey the existing array and inverter before quoting, and the notification or application is part of the job.

If the power fails in Orpington, will a battery keep the boiler and lights on?

Only if the system is designed for it, so we don't promise it. A grid-connected battery has to stop feeding the network during a cut, and many shut down completely; keeping chosen circuits live needs an inverter with a backup output and wiring arranged around it, which the survey confirms or rules out. Mains gas is the only heating in 84.7% of the ward's homes, and a gas boiler's pump and controls run on electricity, so tell us if the boiler is the circuit you care about. Report the cut free on 105.

We own a flat above a shop in Orpington. Can we have a battery fitted?

Possibly, but the lease comes first. Flats like yours are unusually common here: the 2021 Census counted 113 of the ward's households in a flat inside a commercial building, 2.4%, against 1.3% across Bromley. The freeholder usually has to agree before anything is fixed to the structure or wired into the building's supply, and the roof, if you want panels to charge the battery, may be theirs. The survey costs nothing and looks at where in the flat a battery could safely sit.
