Tonbridge Battery storage
Battery storage in Tonbridge
We install home batteries in Tonbridge with new solar panels, or add one to panels already on the roof after surveying the existing installation, with UK Power Networks' G98 or G99 paperwork handled as part of the install. In Higham Wood, where 62.8% of properties date from 1945–64, 72.0% of households own their home, so the decision is usually theirs to make. A battery fitted in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then charged at 5%.

Who decides in Higham Wood, Trench Wood and the centre
Who owns a Tonbridge home settles who can say yes to a battery, and the town’s four Census areas (MSOAs) give different answers. In Higham Wood, 72.0% of households own their home and 42.3% own it outright, so the choice is usually the household’s own. In Trench Wood, 32.0% rent from a social landlord, mostly housing associations, whose agreement comes first. In the Tonbridge Town MSOA, 24.6% rent privately and 30.9% of households live in purpose-built flats, where a landlord, freeholder or managing agent has a say. We fit batteries alongside solar panels, new or existing, so in a central flat the first question is whether any panels on the building feed your own meter.
Post-war semis north of the centre
The Valuation Office Agency dates 62.8% of Higham Wood’s properties and 46.4% of Trench Wood’s to 1945–64, against 25.4% across the town and 16.0% in England; in Higham Wood, 51.7% were built in 1955–64 alone. Semi-detached houses are home to 53.3% of Higham Wood’s households and 55.4% of Trench Wood’s. A build date says little about the wiring a house has today, which is why we survey the existing installation before quoting. If the consumer unit needs replacing before a battery can join it, that is work for our electrician in Tonbridge.
The south and centre are older: 37.5% of South & Haysden’s properties and 31.4% of Tonbridge Town’s were built before 1919, against 21.1% across the town and 19.9% in England. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, whose conservation areas include Tonbridge and Quarry Hill, says permitted development rights for alterations are more limited in conservation areas. A battery fitted indoors doesn’t normally need planning permission, but one on an outside wall may change how the house looks, so check with the council first. Our Kent planning guide for solar panels has a section on batteries.
Out of the Medway’s reach
On 30 September 2026 the Environment Agency opened the expanded Leigh flood storage area, on the Medway between Leigh and Penshurst, upstream of Tonbridge, together with new defences at Hildenborough. The £42 million scheme raised the area’s capacity by around 23%, to about 7.4 million cubic metres, and will reduce flood risk to 1,870 homes and 575 businesses in Tonbridge and Hildenborough. The original storage area, completed in 1982, was operated 75 times between 1981 and summer 2026. Defences reduce the risk rather than remove it, so where the battery and inverter sit is agreed at the survey with the river in mind.
Tonbridge’s midday surplus, used after dark
PVGIS puts an unshaded 4 kWp array facing south in Tonbridge at 4,245 kWh a year. That is the highest of the 13 towns on our areas list, but only just, and it tips Tonbridge into the next generation band of the MCS self-consumption tables, where a smaller share is used at home. For a household using 2,500–2,999 kWh a year and out for half the day, 17% of that output is used in the house without storage and 53% with a 10 kWh battery, against 18% and 56% on Sevenoaks’ 4,192 kWh. The rest is exported. Our guide to whether solar is worth it in Kent sets Tonbridge’s yearly figures beside Sevenoaks and Maidstone, with and without a battery.
Cars can change those numbers. In Tonbridge, 81.5% of households have a car or van and 35.6% have two or more, rising to 47.2% in Higham Wood. If one is or will be electric, include home charging in the usage you give us: a 7 kW charger running for two hours draws 14 kWh, more than a 10 kWh battery holds. Every guide-priced system we publish includes 10kWh of battery capacity, your quotation is worked out from your own usage, when you use it and the roof space available, and the guide prices are on solar panel and battery costs in Kent.
Panels already on a Tonbridge roof
DESNZ counted 3,652 solar PV installations across Tonbridge and Malling at the end of 2025, more than double the 1,768 at the end of 2020. That count takes in Kings Hill, West Malling, Snodland and the rest of the borough, so it is not a figure for the town. For a Tonbridge home that already has panels, a battery can usually be added without replacing them; installation, commissioning and app monitoring are set out on our battery storage installation page.
Under HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6, installing a battery in a home has been zero-rated since 1 February 2024, whether it arrives with new panels or joins existing ones. The zero rate runs until 31 March 2027, and from 1 April 2027 the rate reverts to 5%. Whether a scheme can help further is covered on solar and battery grants in Kent.
Connecting a battery on Tonbridge’s network
The Elexon lookup puts TN9 1AA in grid supply point group _J, which places Tonbridge in UK Power Networks’ South Eastern Power Networks (SPN) licence area. Under the G98 and G99 connection standards, storage counts towards the same total as generation. Up to 16 A per phase between them, which is 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, the installation goes in under G98 and is notified within 28 days of commissioning. Beyond that, a G99 application has to be accepted before it connects, so a battery with its own inverter can move a home whose panels went in under G98 into G99. Our installs include that notification or application as standard.
From Glebe Farm Business Park, Keston, Tonbridge is 14.9 miles away in a straight line and further by road. Of the 13 towns on our areas list, only Maidstone is further from the office.

| 4 kWp south-facing, Tonbridge | Used in the home | Exported | First-year value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panels only | 722 kWh | 3,523 kWh | £613 |
| With a 10 kWh battery | 2,250 kWh | 1,995 kWh | £832 |
PVGIS 4,245 kWh a year for this town. Illustrative first-year figures, not a guarantee: import 26.32p/kWh (Ofgem energy price cap, 1 Oct – 31 Dec 2026, electricity, Direct Debit, GB average unit rate (26.32p/kWh)); export 12p/kWh (Outgoing Octopus Smart Export Guarantee tariff, 12p/kWh variable (Octopus customers with a half-hourly export meter), read 15 Oct 2026); self-use from MCS MGD 003 Issue 2.0 self-consumption tables, 2,500–2,999 kWh use, occupied half the day. Coutts' guide price for 4kWp with 10kWh battery capacity is from £9,500, inclusive of VAT at 0% (the relief runs to 31 March 2027). 02 Questions from Tonbridge
Battery storage,
answered for Tonbridge.
Our 1950s semi in Higham Wood has had solar panels for years. Can a battery be added?
Usually, and the panels can normally stay as they are. We survey what is already there and look at the inverter before quoting, because that decides how a battery can be joined to it safely. The connection paperwork is part of the same check. G98 covers up to 16 A per phase, or 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, and storage counts towards that total along with the panels, so a home whose panels went in under G98 may need a G99 application once a battery with its own inverter joins them. A battery added to panels on your home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027.
Will a battery keep a Tonbridge house running in a power cut?
Only if it is built to. A battery connected to the grid has to stop feeding the network when the network fails, so keeping chosen circuits live through a cut takes backup equipment that separates them from the grid, plus wiring designed for it. Whether the system on your quotation does that is settled at the survey, never assumed. The cut itself is for UK Power Networks to fix, as it runs Tonbridge's network under its South Eastern Power Networks licence: call 105, free from anywhere in England, Scotland or Wales.
Our house is near the Medway in Tonbridge. Where would the battery and inverter go?
Where they can stay dry, in a position agreed with you at the survey. The Environment Agency's expanded Leigh flood storage area, opened upstream of the town on 30 September 2026, will reduce flood risk to 1,870 homes and 575 businesses in Tonbridge and Hildenborough. The agency also says defences cannot remove flood risk completely, and that figure is not an assessment of any one address. If your home has flooded before, or GOV.UK's long-term flood risk service shows it at risk, tell us when you book.
We rent from a housing association in Trench Wood. Could we have a battery fitted?
Only with the association's written agreement, because a battery becomes part of the house's fixed electrical installation and the house is theirs. You would not be the only household asking: at the 2021 Census, 875 of Trench Wood's 2,738 households (32.0%) rented from a social landlord, against 19.6% across Tonbridge. The association may have its own policy on solar panels and storage, so ask it first. If it agrees, the survey and written quotation follow as they would for an owner.
