Chislehurst EV charger installation

EV charger installation in Chislehurst

At the 2021 Census, 85.4% of Chislehurst ward's households had a car or van and 37.9% had two or more, yet on 1 July 2026 the whole London Borough of Bromley had 225 public chargers, 67.1 per 100,000 people against London's 345.1. We check the supply and consumer unit before quoting, and OZEV grants of up to £500 a socket, open until 31 March 2027, can help the ward's flat owners, renters, landlords and on-street households, though not owner-occupiers with their own drive. With 60 listed-building entries in the ward, check the address first: the permitted development right for a wall charger does not reach a listed building's curtilage.

Two-car drives in the west, terraces in the north

At the 2021 Census, 5,353 of Chislehurst ward’s 6,266 households (85.4%) had a car or van, and 2,377 (37.9%) had two or more; only 14.6% had none, against 22.9% across Bromley. The ward’s two best-fit census areas, which also take in three small areas beyond its boundary, park very differently. In Chislehurst West & Elmstead, where 50.9% of households live in a detached house, 42.4% ran two or more vehicles. In Chislehurst North, semi-detached houses (35.6%) and terraces (33.2%) hold more than two-thirds of households, and 16.3% had no car.

On a West & Elmstead plot the survey asks how many cars charge each night and how far the furthest space sits from the consumer unit; the Hypervolt on our price list comes with a 5 m, 7.5 m or 10 m lead, which may let one unit reach both bays. In Chislehurst North the first question is whether there is an off-street space at all, which the Census, counting terraces but not driveways, cannot answer.

Supply, board and earth on Chislehurst’s London licence

At 7 kW a home charger pulls roughly 32 A for hours at a stretch. In West & Elmstead that lands on top of heavy use: DESNZ’s 2024 mean there was 4,885 kWh per domestic meter, second-highest of Bromley’s 39 middle-layer areas, against 3,566 kWh in Chislehurst North and 3,488 kWh across the borough. A year’s total is not a peak, so the survey adds the charger to the house’s maximum demand and compares that with the main fuse; where two cars charge together, load management can share the current. In 2021, 336 of the ward’s households (5.4%) were heated by electricity alone, and there the heating may already claim the night-time hours a charger would use.

A charger on a Chislehurst drive or garage wall serves a car parked in the open, so BS 7671’s rules for outdoor charging points apply. Under them, a PME earth, taken from UK Power Networks’ own cable, may serve the charging circuit only with added protection: open-PEN detection built into the charger, or an earth electrode for that circuit alone.

BR7 6AA in Chislehurst North and BR7 5NA in West & Elmstead both return grid supply point group _C, UK Power Networks’ London Power Networks licence. The network must be told about every home charger: a notification after fitting when the house’s total demand stays within its supply, an application beforehand when it would not. The installer, not the householder, sends it.

Grants for Chislehurst’s flats, lets and kerbside homes

In 2021, 77.0% of the ward’s households owned their home, against 68.5% across Bromley. OZEV pays nothing towards a charger at an owner-occupied house with its own drive, so there the written quotation is the whole cost.

Since 1 April 2026 each of OZEV’s three home schemes has paid 75% of the cost of buying and installing a charger, up to £500 a socket, and all three close on 31 March 2027. Flat owners and tenants need private off-street parking and an eligible car, and tenants need written permission from the landlord or freeholder; in Chislehurst that could include some of the 1,165 households in purpose-built flats, the 945 renting privately and the 447 renting from a social landlord. Landlords registered with Companies House or for VAT have a scheme of their own, covering as many as 200 sockets a year. A household that parks only on the street qualifies when the cable will run to the kerb through a permanent cross-pavement channel and Bromley, as highway authority for the borough’s own roads, has agreed to it. OZEV confirms eligibility before we fit; as an OZEV-approved installer, we then claim the grant. Our guide to the benefits of a home EV charger compares home and public charging.

Listed houses, the 1971 conservation area and Kemnal Road

Bromley designated the Chislehurst Conservation Area on 2 November 1971, and both postcodes checked for this page, BR7 6AA and BR7 5NA, fall inside it. The ward also holds 60 National Heritage List entries, four of them Grade II*, Camden Place among them. For a charger, the two designations work differently. Class D of the permitted development order, the right to fix a charger to a wall beside an off-street parking space, has no conservation-area exclusion, but it does not apply within the curtilage of a listed building. A listed house therefore needs Bromley’s planning permission, and listed building consent as well if the unit is fixed to the building itself. From 21 October 2026, Class D also covers a single wall charger elsewhere in a home’s curtilage, such as one feeding a car at the kerb through a cross-pavement channel, but that extension does not apply inside a conservation area.

Kemnal Road has an Article 4 direction of its own, but it applies to the land edged red on its plan and removes rights for gates, fences, new accesses and temporary uses, not for charging points. Bromley’s interactive map shows whether an address is listed, locally listed or inside a conservation area. Where the unit will be on show, the Andersen A2 on our price list comes with premium finishes.

Public chargers, the roof and Biggin Hill

Without a home charger, Chislehurst drivers rely on a sparse public network. The Department for Transport’s 1 July 2026 figures give the whole of Bromley 225 public chargers, 80 of them rated 50 kW or more, which is 67.1 per 100,000 people; London as a whole has 345.1. The borough had 243 on 1 January, and Chislehurst is not counted on its own. Our guide to choosing an EV charger for your home sets out what to compare between units.

Where panels are already up, PVGIS, the European Commission’s solar model, puts the yield of an unshaded, south-facing 4 kWp roof in Chislehurst at 4,178 kWh a year. Solar integration is an option on every unit we price for EV charger installation, letting a car parked at home on a bright afternoon soak up what the roof would otherwise export.

Our Biggin Hill office is 7.1 miles (11.5 km) from Chislehurst in a straight line, further by road. For a consumer unit upgrade before the charger goes in, or any other wiring in the house, see our page for an electrician in Chislehurst.

02 Questions from Chislehurst

EV charger installation,
answered for Chislehurst.

We run two cars from a detached house in west Chislehurst. Will the supply cope with charging both?

It may, but we measure before we quote. In 2021, 42.4% of households in Chislehurst West & Elmstead had two or more cars or vans, and in 2024 the area's domestic meters averaged 4,885 kWh, the second-highest mean of Bromley's 39 middle-layer areas. Two 7 kW chargers running together draw about 64 A, so the survey adds them to the house's existing maximum demand. If the main fuse cannot carry both, load management shares the current between them, or UK Power Networks is asked about an upgrade before anything is fitted.

Our house is on Kemnal Road. Does the Article 4 direction there stop a charger on the front wall?

Not by its own terms. Bromley's direction for land at Kemnal Road, Chislehurst applies to the land edged red on its plan and removes permitted development for gates, fences and walls, new accesses and temporary uses (Classes A and B of Part 2 and of Part 4). It does not name Class D or E, the charging-point classes. Whether the house is listed matters more: Class D does not reach the curtilage of a listed building, so there a wall charger needs Bromley's planning permission, and listed building consent too if it is fixed to the building. Bromley's interactive map shows listed buildings and the conservation area.

I rent a flat in Chislehurst with an allocated parking bay. Can I claim the £500 grant?

Quite possibly. OZEV's grant for renters and flat owners pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a charger, up to £500, until 31 March 2027. The bay has to be a private, clearly marked off-street space you can use at any time; the car must be on OZEV's eligible list and owned, on order, or leased or used for work for at least six months; and you need written permission from your landlord, freeholder or managing agent. If the building is listed, as 60 entries in the ward are, OZEV also asks for Bromley's written permission. OZEV confirms eligibility before we fit, and as an OZEV-approved installer we then claim the grant.

We live in a Chislehurst North terrace with no drive. Can we still charge at home?

Possibly, through a channel across the pavement. OZEV's grant for households with on-street parking pays 75% of a charger's cost, up to £500, until 31 March 2027, where the cable crosses the footway in a permanent cross-pavement channel that Bromley, as highway authority for the borough's own roads, has agreed to; you also undertake to get any planning permission needed. From 21 October 2026 permitted development also covers a single wall charger elsewhere in a home's curtilage, such as one feeding a car at the kerb, but not inside a conservation area, and Chislehurst North's BR7 6AA is inside the Chislehurst Conservation Area. In 2021, a third (33.2%) of Chislehurst North's households lived in a terrace.
