Petts Wood EV charger installation
EV charger installation in Petts Wood
At the 2021 Census, 40.0% of households in eastern Petts Wood (MSOA Bromley 025) had two or more cars or vans, and Bromley's 2025 appraisal of the Chislehurst Road conservation area says most of its houses have driveways designed for cars. We are OZEV approved and check the incoming supply and consumer unit before quoting, and every charger is reported to UK Power Networks. OZEV's grants (75% of the cost, capped at £500 a socket, until 31 March 2027) help flat owners, renters, landlords and homes with only on-street parking; an owner living in a house with its own drive gets none.

Laid out for the car in 1928
Petts Wood was planned around a station that Basil Scruby helped pay for with land and money. It opened on 9 July 1928, the year he and the architect Leonard Culliford produced the masterplan. Bromley’s 2025 appraisal of the Chislehurst Road conservation area records that Scruby’s masterplan put drainage, gas, water and electricity in place, and that he sold the plots on to builders, as many as 45 of them in Petts Wood East. By the Valuation Office Agency’s count, 2,140 of the 3,070 Council Tax properties in Bromley 025, the MSOA covering eastern Petts Wood, were built in 1930–1939 (about 70%). In Bromley 022, the western side around Station Square, the share is about 49%, against about 26% across the borough.
The same appraisal notes that in that conservation area “most houses have existing driveways designed to accommodate vehicles”, while the detached garages built with many houses sit behind the building line and may be too small for a modern car. So a Petts Wood survey starts on the drive: where the car actually stands, whether the garage is used for it at all, and how far the cable must run from the consumer unit to a wall the charging lead can reach.
Two cars, one drive and a front boundary
At the 2021 Census, 85.0% of households in Petts Wood & Knoll ward had a car or van and 37.4% had two or more. The ward also takes in the Knoll side of Orpington, so Bromley 025 is the closer picture of Petts Wood itself: there, 40.0% of households (1,187 of 2,970) had two or more and only 12.3% had none, where 22.9% of households across the borough had no car. Semis and detached houses held 87.1% of Bromley 025’s households (2,586 of 2,970), and 74.2% of the ward’s.
A second car often means a second parking space, and in Petts Wood the front boundary is protected. Since 16 June 2016, Article 4 directions have removed the permitted right to put up a gate, fence or wall across the Area of Special Residential Character and in The Chenies, Chislehurst Road and Station Square conservation areas, and the 2025 appraisals record the same for The Covert and The Thrifts. Those appraisals also point out that new hard standing over 5 square metres needs planning permission unless it is porous or drains into the garden, and advise keeping any new opening in a front wall as narrow as possible.
Five conservation areas and the ASRC
Five of Bromley’s 47 conservation areas are in Petts Wood: The Chenies (designated 1982), Chislehurst Road (1989), Station Square (1995), and The Covert and The Thrifts (both 2022). Most of the rest, about 1,500 detached and semi-detached homes on about 112 hectares, is the ASRC, which also carries directions on adding storeys and on enlarging or altering roofs. A charger is not among the works these directions describe, but the council decides how its rules apply, so before a unit goes on a front wall here, check the address on Bromley’s interactive map and ask, or apply for a lawful development certificate.
Who the £500 grants reach in an owner-occupied suburb
Owners held 83.8% of the ward’s 6,910 households in 2021, 44.5% outright, and 89.6% in Bromley 025, against 68.5% across Bromley. That matters here, because none of OZEV’s home grants is open to an owner who lives in a house with its own drive; for that household the written quotation is the whole cost. The three schemes that remain each cover 75% of the cost, with a ceiling of £500 a socket since 1 April 2026, and funding for all three runs to 31 March 2027.
The flats and renters grant is for people who own and live in a flat, or rent any home other than as a lodger, with private off-street parking and an eligible vehicle; tenants need their landlord’s written permission. In the ward that could include some of the 835 privately renting households and the 696 in purpose-built flats. Bromley 022, which takes in Station Square, counted 105 households in a commercial building, for example above a shop, against 4 in Bromley 025. Landlords have their own grant, covered in the questions below. Households with only on-street parking can claim towards a charger fed through a permanent cross-pavement channel, with the consent of Bromley council as highway authority for borough roads. Under each scheme you apply before anything is fitted, and the OZEV-approved installer claims the grant afterwards. Our page on grants for homes in Kent and south-east London sets out each scheme’s conditions.
UK Power Networks, gas boilers and the earth on the drive
Of 14 BR5 1 postcodes looked up in Elexon’s grid supply point groups, 12 (Station Square’s BR5 1LZ included) return only UK Power Networks’ South Eastern Power Networks licence, while BR5 1AA and BR5 1AQ also return its London Power Networks licence. Either way, UK Power Networks runs the network and every charger has to be reported to it: after fitting where the supply has room for the home’s new maximum demand, or by application before fitting where it has not.
Mains gas alone heated 86.7% of the ward’s households in 2021 and 89.8% in Bromley 025, so in most Petts Wood homes a 7 kW charger running at about 32 A for hours becomes the largest sustained load on the supply. The 311 ward households heated only by electricity (4.5%, against 6.8% across Bromley) need the closest look, because heating and charging can want the same overnight hours. Where the car charges in the open on the drive, the earthing matters too: on a PME supply, where the earth comes from UK Power Networks’ cable, BS 7671 lets that earth serve the charger only with protection against a broken PEN conductor, such as detection built into the unit or a separate earth electrode.
A thin public network, and the roof above the drive
The Department for Transport counted 225 public chargers across the whole London Borough of Bromley on 1 July 2026, a fall of 18 in six months. That is 67.1 for every 100,000 residents; London as a whole has 345.1. The Orpington constituency, which takes in Petts Wood & Knoll ward, had 61 public chargers, 30 of them 50 kW or faster. For a driver weighing a wallbox against those public points, our home charging guide sets out the convenience and cost case.
On a Petts Wood roof, PVGIS puts the yield of an unshaded 4 kWp array facing south at 35° at 4,174 kWh a year. The myenergi Zappi, the Hypervolt and every other unit on our EV charger installation price list can be ordered with solar integration, so a car parked at home by day can take what the roof makes. Guide prices start from £1,080 + VAT for the Hypervolt and £1,100 + VAT for the 7 kW Zappi. All prices are subject to VAT, which may vary depending on the job, and the exact VAT is confirmed on our written quotation.
Petts Wood lies 5.7 miles (9.2 km) north-north-east of our office at 214 Main Road, Biggin Hill, as the crow flies. For any other electrical work in a Petts Wood home, from a single socket to a full rewire, see our electrician in Petts Wood page.

02 Questions from Petts Wood
EV charger installation,
answered for Petts Wood.
Our house is in a Petts Wood conservation area or the ASRC. Can the charger go on the front wall?
Ask Bromley council before anything is fixed, because it decides how its rules apply. Petts Wood has five conservation areas, The Chenies, Chislehurst Road, Station Square, The Covert and The Thrifts, and most of the rest of the suburb is the Area of Special Residential Character. The Article 4 directions published for these areas deal with gates, fences and walls, extra storeys and roofs, so ask how they bear on a charger. The council's interactive map tells you whether the address sits in a conservation area or is a listed building, and a lawful development certificate puts its answer in writing. In a listed building, the renters and flat owners grant also needs the council's written permission.
Our Petts Wood semi dates from the 1930s. Will the consumer unit need replacing first?
Not necessarily. The Valuation Office Agency dates 2,140 of the 3,070 Council Tax properties in eastern Petts Wood to 1930–1939, but a house's age says nothing about the board fitted since. A 7 kW charger draws about 32 A for hours at a time, and BS 7671 gives it a dedicated circuit with its own RCD protection, so we check the consumer unit before quoting. If the board cannot take the new circuit, that work is priced on the written quotation.
We have two cars and one drive in Petts Wood. Do we need two chargers?
Not always. In eastern Petts Wood (MSOA Bromley 025), 1,187 of 2,970 households had two or more cars or vans at the 2021 Census. If the cars can take turns overnight, one charger whose lead reaches both spaces may be enough: the Hypervolt we fit is offered with a 5 m, 7.5 m or 10 m lead. If both must charge on the same night, the supply has to carry two units or their combined current has to be capped. A new gate or wall to make room for the second car needs Bromley's permission across the ASRC and the conservation areas.
I let out a house in Petts Wood. Is there a grant for a charger?
Possibly. OZEV's residential landlord grant covers 75% of the cost with a £500 ceiling per socket, on up to 200 sockets a year, and is funded to 31 March 2027. You cannot live in the property, the space must be off-street, private, clearly defined and accessible to your tenant, and an individual landlord, like a company, must also be registered at Companies House or for VAT, or be on the register of social housing providers. Nothing may be fitted before OZEV confirms eligibility; once the work is done, the installer claims the grant and OZEV pays it to the installer. If you do not qualify, your tenant may be able to apply for the renters grant, with your written permission.
