Orpington EV charger installation
EV Charger Installation in Orpington
At the 2021 Census, 79.3% of households in Orpington ward had a car or van and 35.1% had two or more; four in five lived in a house. We check the supply and consumer unit before quoting, and every charger has to be reported to UK Power Networks, which runs the ward's network under its South Eastern Power Networks licence. A house owner with a driveway gets no OZEV grant; flat owners and renters with private parking, and households with only on-street parking who fit a cross-pavement channel, can claim up to £500 until 31 March 2027.

Second cars beside semis
Census figures here are for Orpington ward, the 2022 ward that holds The Priory, a smaller area than the BR5 and BR6 postcodes. In 2021, 3,752 of its 4,730 households (79.3%) had a car or van, and 35.1% had two or more, against 30.8% across the London Borough of Bromley. For a two-car household the question is whether one charger, shared overnight, can reach both parking places, or whether two units are needed on a supply that can feed both; the Hypervolt’s choice of 5 m, 7.5 m or 10 m leads can settle it.
Semi-detached houses held 47.8% of the ward’s households, against 29.9% across Bromley, and detached houses another 21.4%, while terraces held 10.9%, about half the borough’s share. No Census table records a driveway, so for the four in five households here that live in a house, the survey checks where each car stands, which wall the unit can go on and the length of the cable run back to the board.
Who the £500 grants reach in Orpington
Owners held 71.5% of the ward’s households in 2021, 39.5% outright, against 68.5% across Bromley. An owner-occupied house with its own driveway attracts no OZEV grant, so for an owned Orpington semi on a drive, the price on the quotation is what you pay.
The three OZEV home schemes each pay up to 75% of the cost, capped at £500 a socket since 1 April 2026, with funding until 31 March 2027. Flat owners who live in their flat, and tenants in any home, qualify if they have private off-street parking and an eligible car; tenants also need their landlord’s agreement. That could take in some of the ward’s 944 households in flats, 113 of them in a commercial building such as over a shop (2.4%, against Bromley’s 1.3%), and some of the 557 private and 750 social renting households. Landlords registered at Companies House or for VAT have their own grant, covering up to 200 sockets a year. A household with only on-street parking can get help towards a charger whose cable crosses the footway in a permanent channel, once the highway authority, Bromley council on borough roads, has consented, and not every council approves them. Our grants guide for Kent and south-east London sets out the household schemes’ conditions.
Gas-heated homes, 1930s housing and the board
Mains gas alone heated 84.7% of the ward’s households, so in most of them a 7 kW charger, drawing about 32 A for hours at a time, would be the largest sustained load on the supply. The 260 households heated only by electricity (5.5%; Bromley 6.8%) deserve the most care, because heating and car charging can then compete for the same overnight hours.
The Council Tax list, a separate count from Census households, dates 1,860 of the 5,740 properties in the ward’s eight small areas to the 1930s and 2,050 to 1945-1972, while only 220 (3.8%) were built before 1919, against 17.0% of Bromley’s stock. A house’s age does not show which board is on the wall now, so the consumer unit is checked before we quote. The charger needs its own RCD-protected circuit, and a board with no room for one has to be dealt with first.
Every charger also has to be reported to UK Power Networks, whose South Eastern Power Networks licence covers the ward. Where the home’s new maximum demand would be between 60 A and 100 A, that report becomes an application made before fitting.
Few public chargers, and what the roof can add
Without a home charger the fallback is thin. The Department for Transport’s count for 1 July 2026 found 225 public chargers in the whole London Borough of Bromley: 67.1 per 100,000 people, under a fifth of London’s 345.1 and well below the UK’s 174.9. The Orpington constituency, far larger than this ward, had 61, 30 of them rated 50 kW or more. Our guide to the benefits of installing a home EV charger weighs charging at home against the public network.
PVGIS models 4,172 kWh a year from an unshaded 4 kWp south-facing array in Orpington, and each of the six chargers on our EV charger installation price list comes with a solar integration option, which lets a car parked at home in daylight soak up what the roof would otherwise export. The Hypervolt starts from £1,080 + VAT and the 7 kW myenergi Zappi from £1,100 + VAT; all prices are subject to VAT, which may vary with the job, and the exact VAT is confirmed on our written quotation.
The Priory, and the road from Biggin Hill
About 87% of The Priory, Orpington conservation area, designated in 1985, lies inside the ward, around the Grade II* Priory and Church of All Saints. The ward holds 10 entries on the National Heritage List in all, among them Goddington House and two coal taxposts. Fixing a charger to one of those buildings may need listed building consent from Bromley council, so tell us at booking if your home is on the list.
From our office at 214 Main Road, Biggin Hill, Orpington is 5.1 miles (8.3 km) away in a straight line, and further by road. For other electrical work in the house, see our electrician in Orpington page.

02 Questions from Orpington
EV charger installation,
answered for Orpington.
We own our Orpington semi and it has a drive. Is there a grant, and what will a charger cost?
There is no OZEV grant for an owner-occupier whose house has its own driveway, so the written quotation is the whole cost. Our guide prices start from £1,080 + VAT for a Hypervolt and £1,100 + VAT for a 7 kW myenergi Zappi. All prices are subject to VAT, which may vary with the job, and the exact VAT is confirmed on the quotation. In 2021, 71.5% of households in Orpington ward owned their home and 47.8% lived in a semi-detached house.
I rent a flat in Orpington with an allocated bay in the block's car park. Can I get the £500 grant?
Often, yes. Since 1 April 2026, OZEV's flats and renters grant has paid 75% of the cost of buying and installing one socket, up to £500, and funding runs until 31 March 2027. You must live in the flat, the bay must be private off-street parking you are legally entitled to and can reach at all times, and you must keep, lease or be assigned an eligible plug-in car, or have one on order for delivery within three months. Your landlord's permission, and the freeholder's or managing agent's where the block needs it, must be in place before you apply. You apply to OZEV yourself, the charger must not be fitted until OZEV confirms you are eligible, and the installer then claims the grant. In 2021, 771 of the ward's households lived in purpose-built blocks of flats.
Our Orpington house was built after 2000. Could it already have a charge point?
It might. Since 15 June 2022, Part S of the Building Regulations has generally required new homes with associated parking to have a charge point, although homes whose plans were lodged earlier and whose work started by 15 June 2023 could be finished without one. The Council Tax list dates 950 of the 5,740 properties in the ward's eight small areas (16.6%) to 2000 or later, against 10.8% across Bromley, and around 130 of them to 2022-2026, so even a recent home may predate the rule. If a unit is already fitted, tell us its make.
Do I need to contact UK Power Networks before a charger is fitted in Orpington?
Not yourself. Every charger has to be reported to the network operator, and the installer completes the application on your behalf through the Energy Networks Association's Connect Direct platform. BR6 0TW, BR6 9AA and BR6 0LS, all inside Orpington ward, are in UK Power Networks' South Eastern Power Networks area. Where the home's new maximum demand with the charger would be between 60 A and 100 A, the application goes in before fitting, and UK Power Networks confirms within 10 working days whether the charger can be connected or whether work is needed first.
