Tonbridge EV charger installation
EV charger installation in Tonbridge
Four in five Tonbridge households (81.5%) had a car or van in 2021, but where they park changes across the town: semis are the main home in Higham Wood and Trench Wood, while 30.9% of households in the Tonbridge Town MSOA live in purpose-built flats. OZEV's grants of up to £500 a socket, open until 31 March 2027, help flat owners, renters and landlords with off-street parking but not the owner of a house with its own drive, and Kent County Council does not currently allow the pavement channels the on-street grant needs. We check the incoming supply and consumer unit before quoting, and every new charger has to be notified to UK Power Networks, which runs the town's network under its South Eastern Power Networks licence.

North to south, four ways of parking
Tonbridge on this page means the four census areas (MSOAs) that carry its name: Higham Wood and Trench Wood in the north, Tonbridge Town in the centre and South & Haysden in the south, leaving out Hildenborough. In 2021, 12,025 of their 14,755 households had a car or van, 81.5%, and 35.6% had two or more; 18.5% had none, against 12.3% across the borough. The Census asked nothing about drives, so Tonbridge’s housing is the best guide to whether a charger can reach the car.
Higham Wood and Trench Wood: post-war semis
Higham Wood has the most cars: only 13.5% of its households had none, 53.3% lived in a semi and 33.0% in a detached house, and Valuation Office Agency records put 62.8% of its properties in 1945–64, 51.7% in 1955–64 alone. Much of Trench Wood went up in the same decades (46.4% of its properties), and 55.4% of its households live in semis, but 32.0% rent from a social landlord, 28.6% from a housing association. A tenant there needs the landlord’s written permission before anything is fixed to the wall, and a registered provider of social housing can claim OZEV’s landlord grant itself.
OZEV’s grants exclude anyone who owns and lives in a house with its own off-street parking, and 72.0% of Higham Wood households own their home. Where a semi there is earthed through the network’s cable (PME), BS 7671 does not let that earth serve a charger for a car parked outdoors unless a broken PEN conductor in the supply is guarded against, by a charger that detects one or by a separate earth electrode; the survey settles which.
Tonbridge Town: flats, lets and the £500 grants
The centre is where the grants earn their keep. Purpose-built flats house 30.9% of households in the Tonbridge Town MSOA, and converted or commercial buildings, where the Census counts a flat over a shop, another 6.3%; 24.6% rent privately and 22.3% have no car.
OZEV raised its three home chargepoint grants to a maximum of £500 a socket on 1 April 2026, and all three close on 31 March 2027. A flat owner, or a tenant in any kind of home who is not a lodger, with a designated private space off the street can have three-quarters of the cost covered, to a maximum of £500, provided they keep, lease or have on order an eligible vehicle. Landlords of the 2,094 Tonbridge households renting from a private landlord or letting agency can claim 75% of the cost, up to £500 for each socket, for up to 200 sockets a year. Nothing should be installed until OZEV confirms eligibility; once the charger is in, the OZEV-approved installer claims the grant. In a block, the cable’s route from your meter to the bay needs the freeholder’s or managing agent’s consent first.
Terraces at the kerb in the south
The south and centre hold the oldest housing: 37.5% of South & Haysden’s properties date from before 1919, as do 31.4% of Tonbridge Town’s, against under 2% in the two northern areas. The borough council’s appraisal of the Tonbridge Conservation Area, which took in the Slade in 1990, describes it as a Victorian neighbourhood of tight-knit terraced and semi-detached houses close to the road, with narrow streets and on-street parking.
Where a terrace has no drive, the car stays at the kerb. OZEV’s on-street grant, up to £500, only funds a charger fed through a permanent cross-pavement channel such as a gully, and Kent County Council, the highway authority for the town’s roads, is not allowing gullies or cable mats, pending revised electrical-safety guidance from the IET. From 21 October 2026, permitted development also covers a single wall charger elsewhere in a home’s grounds, for a car at the kerb, but not inside a conservation area, which rules it out in the Slade. A wall charger beside an off-street space stays permitted development in a conservation area, provided the house is not listed and the unit keeps within the size and height limits.
The supply, and UK Power Networks’ South Eastern licence
A 7 kW charger can pull around 32 A for several hours, so the load assessment before we quote sets it beside the house’s existing demand and the main fuse and consumer unit actually fitted, whether the house is a Victorian one on the Slade or a 1950s Higham Wood semi. On the network side, TN9 1AA, a postcode in the Tonbridge Town MSOA, is in grid supply point group _J, the area UK Power Networks serves under its SPN licence. Every new charger has to be notified to UK Power Networks: after commissioning where the supply has headroom, or by application before installation where it does not.
Public chargers, and charging from a Tonbridge roof
Where no home charger can reach the car, the public network takes over: the Department for Transport counted 175 public chargers across Tonbridge and Malling, Kings Hill and Snodland included, on 1 July 2026, 51 of them rated 50 kW or more: 127.9 per 100,000 people, against 159.4 in the South East. The borough’s count was 217 on 1 April, but the DfT warns that April-to-July comparisons may be affected: in June one operator removed about 1,270 private chargers that had been wrongly listed as public. Our guide to home EV charger benefits in Kent sets home charging against the public network.
With panels overhead, a car charged at home in daylight can take power that would otherwise be exported, and on PVGIS a south-facing 4 kWp array on an unshaded Tonbridge roof yields 4,245 kWh a year, the highest of the 13 towns we cover. All six chargers on our EV charger installation price list are offered with solar integration, and the Hypervolt with a 5 m, 7.5 m or 10 m lead; our guide to choosing an EV charger for home covers cable length and smart features.
Our office in Keston is 14.9 miles north-west of Tonbridge in a straight line, and further by road. For a new consumer unit, a rewire or an EICR ahead of the charger, see our electrician in Tonbridge page.

02 Questions from Tonbridge
EV charger installation,
answered for Tonbridge.
We own a 1950s semi in Higham Wood with a drive. Is there a grant towards a charger?
No. OZEV's chargepoint grants, worth up to £500 a socket until 31 March 2027, are for flat owners, tenants, landlords and households with only on-street parking. Anyone who owns and lives in a house with its own off-street parking is excluded, and in Higham Wood 72.0% of households own their home and 95.3% live in a house. Our lowest guide price is £1,080 + VAT, for a Hypervolt. All prices are subject to VAT, which may vary with the job; the exact VAT applicable is confirmed on our written quotation.
We're tenants in a flat off Tonbridge High Street with our own space in the residents' car park. Does the £500 grant apply?
It can. OZEV's flats and renters grant covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing the charger, capped at £500, until 31 March 2027, if the space is private, off-street, clearly yours and accessible at all times, and you keep, lease or have been assigned an eligible electric vehicle, or have one on order due within three months. Get written permission from your landlord first; the freeholder or managing agent must also agree how the cable reaches the space. OZEV has to confirm you are eligible before the charger goes in; afterwards the installer claims the grant. We are OZEV approved, so that claim can be ours.
Our Victorian terrace near the Slade has no drive. Could we charge across the pavement?
Not at present. OZEV's on-street parking grant (up to £500, open until 31 March 2027) only pays alongside a permanent channel set into the footway with the highway authority's consent, and Kent County Council, Tonbridge's highway authority, does not currently allow cable gullies or cable mats on the highway while it waits for updated electrical-safety advice from the IET. It says it will update its position later in 2026. The new permitted development right for a wall charger serving a car at the kerb, from 21 October 2026, does not apply in a conservation area, and the Slade itself is inside the Tonbridge Conservation Area. Meanwhile, the 175 public chargers counted across the borough on 1 July 2026 are the alternative.
Will UK Power Networks be told about our new charger?
Yes. TN9 1AA, in the Tonbridge Town MSOA, is in grid supply point group _J, so Tonbridge's network is UK Power Networks' South Eastern (SPN) area, and every new home charger has to be notified to it. If the supply already has headroom for the added load, the notice follows commissioning; if not, an application goes in before the charger is fitted. A bigger main fuse or a new service cable is UK Power Networks' own job. Report a power cut to it on 105, free, rather than to your energy supplier.
