Sevenoaks EV charger installation
EV Charger Installation in Sevenoaks
Four in ten households in the four Sevenoaks town wards ran two or more cars or vans at the 2021 Census, and a third lived in a detached house, yet owning and living in a house with its own drive rules a household out of every OZEV grant. The grants, up to £500 a socket until the schemes close on 31 March 2027, go to flat owners, renters, landlords and homes with only on-street parking, and Sevenoaks has more flats and lets than its district: 19.1% of households live in a purpose-built block and 20.3% rent privately. We are OZEV approved, based 8.6 miles away in Keston as the crow flies, and every quote follows a load assessment and supply check.

Two cars and a detached house: parking in the town wards
The four wards named after the town, Sevenoaks Eastern, Kippington, Northern, and Town and St John’s, held 8,209 households at the 2021 Census. Riverhead, Dunton Green, Seal and Sevenoaks Weald fall outside them.
The houses run large. 34.3% of households lived in a detached house, half as many again as England’s 22.9%, and the Valuation Office Agency puts 28.7% of the town’s council-tax properties in band G or H, against 18.1% across Sevenoaks District and 4.1% across England. 40.0% of households ran two or more cars or vans and 10.3% three or more: more than England’s 35.2% with two or more, though below the district’s 48.4%.
Two cars on one drive do not always need two chargers. A single 7 kW unit placed where its lead reaches both spaces can charge them one after the other; we fit the Hypervolt with a 5 m, 7.5 m or 10 m lead.
Flats, lets and the £500 OZEV grants
OZEV’s remaining home grants are aimed at flats, lets and homes without a drive, and Sevenoaks has more flats and lets than its district: 19.1% of households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021, against 11.7% across Sevenoaks District, and 20.3% rented privately, against 13.4%. A further 12.1% rented from a social landlord. The cap has been £500 a socket since 1 April 2026, and the schemes close on 31 March 2027.
For a flat owner or renter, the grant covers 75% of buying and fitting a socket, up to £500, where there is a private off-street space they can use at all times. They also need an eligible electric vehicle and written permission from the landlord, freeholder or property manager. Landlords letting homes in the town claim through a separate scheme at the same 75% and £500 a socket, for up to 200 sockets a year, provided they are registered at Companies House, registered for VAT or a registered social housing provider. Only an OZEV-approved installer can fit a grant-funded charger, and we are one. Our guide to the benefits of a home EV charger in Kent sets out which household each grant is for.
A Sevenoaks house with only on-street parking has a £500 grant of its own, paying 75% of buying and fitting the socket, but only where a permanent cross-pavement channel, such as a charging gully, goes in with it and the highway authority consents. Here that is Kent County Council, which does not currently allow cross-pavement solutions on the highway: it is waiting on electrical safety advice from the Institution of Engineering and Technology and says it will update its position later in 2026.
Gas heating, the supply and UK Power Networks
Sevenoaks heats mostly with gas: 80.6% of households in the four wards used mains gas alone in 2021, against 72.3% across the district. In those homes a 7 kW charger, drawing about 32 A for hours, is likely to be the largest continuous load the supply carries, so we assess the incoming supply, the consumer unit and existing demand before anything is quoted.
The wires into Sevenoaks are UK Power Networks’, under its South Eastern Power Networks licence; TN13 1AA, a postcode in the town, is in grid supply point group _J. Under the Energy Networks Association process, if a house’s new maximum demand is 60 A or less, the charger goes in and UK Power Networks is notified within 28 days; between 60 A and 100 A, an application goes in before fitting. On a PME supply, where UK Power Networks provides the earth, BS 7671 rules out using that earth for an outdoor charge point unless one of its listed safeguards is used, such as open-PEN detection in the charger or an earth electrode of its own.
Front walls in the conservation areas
The town’s houses are older than the district’s: the Valuation Office Agency places 24.0% of Sevenoaks properties before 1919, against 18.6% across Sevenoaks District and 19.9% across England. Eight conservation areas fall in or touch the four wards, from Sevenoaks High Street (1971) and Kippington and Oakhill Road (1991) to Hartslands (2011), and the wards contain 189 listed-building entries, 114 of them in Town and St John’s. Sevenoaks District Council advises contacting its planning team before even relatively minor external works in a conservation area, such as altering doors and windows, so a charger and its cable on a front wall in one of these areas is worth raising with the council first.
Public charging in the district, and the roof
A Sevenoaks flat with no bay depends on public chargers, and the district has fewer for its population than Kent. The Department for Transport’s device series counted 96 public devices across Sevenoaks District on 1 July 2026, up from 20 in October 2019, 23 of them rated 50 kW or more: 78.2 per 100,000 residents, against Kent’s 93.3 and England’s 138.6. That count covers the whole district, Swanley and Edenbridge included.
PVGIS models about 4,192 kWh a year for an unshaded 4 kWp array facing south at 35° in central Sevenoaks. Every charger we price comes with a solar integration option, so a car left at home in daylight can take power the roof would otherwise export. Our EV charger installation page compares all six units, and solar panels in Sevenoaks covers a roof that has none yet.
Keston, where our office is, lies 8.6 miles from the centre of Sevenoaks in a straight line, not by road. If the consumer unit or older wiring needs work before a charger goes in, our electrician in Sevenoaks page covers it.

02 Questions from Sevenoaks
EV charger installation,
answered for Sevenoaks.
We own a detached house in Kippington with its own drive. Does any grant help with the charger?
No. Since 1 April 2026 the OZEV grants pay up to £500 a socket until 31 March 2027, but only to flat owners, renters, residential landlords, and households with only on-street parking who fit a permanent cross-pavement channel. Owning and living in a house with off-street parking excludes you, unless the house has been converted into flats and you live in one of them. 34.3% of households in the four Sevenoaks wards live in a detached house. The Hypervolt, our lowest guide price, starts at £1,080 + VAT, with the exact VAT confirmed in the written quotation.
I rent a flat in a purpose-built block in Sevenoaks and have my own numbered space. Does the grant apply?
It can. The grant for renters and flat owners covers 75% of buying and fitting a socket, capped at £500, until 31 March 2027. The space must be off-street, private, clearly defined and yours to use at all times, and you need an eligible electric vehicle: registered to you, leased or used as a work vehicle for at least six months, or on order. The application needs written permission from your landlord, freeholder or property manager and, if the building is listed, from the council as well; the four town wards hold 189 list entries. OZEV must confirm you are eligible before the charger goes in. 19.1% of households in the town wards live in a purpose-built block.
We live in the Granville Road and Eardley Road conservation area. Do we need permission for a charger by the front door?
Check with Sevenoaks District Council first. It advises contacting its planning team before even relatively minor external works in a conservation area, and Granville Road and Eardley Road, designated in 1989, is one of eight conservation areas in or touching the town's wards. Kent County Council's guidance adds that a charger facing the street within 2 metres of the road or pavement may need planning permission. A listed house may also need listed building consent; the wards hold 189 list entries. A side wall, the garage or a post at the edge of the drive can keep the unit off the frontage, so those positions are worth weighing at the survey.
Can the supply to our Sevenoaks house run a charger for two cars?
That is what the load assessment settles. Running at 7 kW, a charger draws about 32 A for hours at a time, and that is added to the house's existing maximum demand. If the new total is 60 A or less, the charger can go in and UK Power Networks is notified within 28 days; between 60 A and 100 A, an application goes to UK Power Networks first, and it aims to assess the supply within 10 working days. One charger serving each car in turn avoids adding a second 32 A load, and the question comes up here: 40.0% of households in the town wards ran two or more cars or vans in 2021, against 35.2% across England.
