Westerham EV charger installation

EV Charger Installation in Westerham

Nine in ten households in the Westerham and Crockham Hill ward had a car or van at the 2021 Census, and 313 had three or more, so the first questions are which space the lead must reach and whether the supply can carry it; we check the supply before anything is quoted. OZEV grants of up to £500 a socket, funded until 31 March 2027, reach renters and flat owners with their own off-street space and landlords letting homes with one, but not the owner of a house with its own drive. A household that parks at the kerb is stuck for now: Kent County Council, the highway authority, does not currently allow cross-pavement charging solutions on the highway.

Cars per household in the Westerham and Crockham Hill ward

The 2021 Census counts Westerham town, Crockham Hill and the farmland around them as one ward of 1,936 households. Only 195 (10.1%) had no car or van. Two cars were nearly as common as one, 679 households against 749, and 313 (16.2%) had three or more, against 15.0% across Sevenoaks District.

With that many three-car households, the question is less whether a charger is possible than which space its lead must reach, and whether the supply can run it most evenings. Two chargers can be fitted, but at 7 kW each is a separate load of about 32 A, and the survey decides whether the house can carry both.

Terraces, older houses and flats

No Census question asks about driveways, so parking has to be read from the housing. The ward splits almost three ways: 584 detached houses, 562 semis and 494 terraces, the terraced share above the district’s 22.4%. The Valuation Office Agency puts 34.9% of properties in the ward’s three census areas (LSOAs) before 1919, against 18.6% across the district. Houses of that age were not laid out around a car, so a drive cannot be taken for granted.

Of the 295 households in flats, 213 were in purpose-built blocks and 31 in a commercial building, which in Census terms includes a flat above a shop or office. Where a Westerham flat has its own allocated bay, written permission from the freeholder or managing agent for the cable route from your meter to the space comes first, and the OZEV grant asks for it too.

OZEV grants: who qualifies in the ward

Owning the house is what rules most people out. 1,306 households in the ward (67.5%) owned their home in 2021, and an owner who lives in a house with its own drive or garage is outside every OZEV chargepoint grant. Owning a flat is different.

The grants that remain pay up to £500 a socket, the rate in force since 1 April 2026, and are funded until 31 March 2027. A renter, or the owner of a flat, with a private, clearly defined off-street space gets 75% of the cost of a socket, up to £500, and needs an eligible electric vehicle, owned, leased or on order. That counts for more here than across the district as a whole: 312 households in the ward rented privately in 2021, 16.1% against Sevenoaks District’s 13.4%. A renter needs written permission from the landlord, and a lodger in the owner’s own home cannot apply. Landlords letting any of the 274 homes rented through a private landlord or letting agency can claim up to £500 a socket themselves for off-street spaces, provided they are registered at Companies House or for VAT.

Every scheme needs an OZEV-authorised installer, and we are OZEV approved; under the renters and flat owners grant, the installer claims the money once the charger is fitted. Who qualifies for which scheme is set out in our guide to the benefits of installing a home EV charger in Kent.

Parking at the kerb: Kent County Council’s position

OZEV’s grant for households with on-street parking also pays 75% of the cost, up to £500, but only alongside a permanent cross-pavement solution, such as a cable channel set into the footway, that the local highway authority has agreed to. For Westerham that is Kent County Council. Sevenoaks District Council deals with any planning permission, and Bromley, the borough our office is in, has no say in either.

Kent County Council’s charging page says it does not currently allow cross-pavement solutions, cable gullies and cable mats included, on the highway. It is waiting for the Institution of Engineering and Technology to update its advice on electrical safety, and says it will update the page later in 2026 once it has decided. Until then, a Westerham household whose only parking is a street the county maintains cannot use the grant, and the terraces opening onto the pavement are where that bites.

The supply, the earth and UK Power Networks’ SPN licence

Before anything is quoted we check the incoming supply, the consumer unit and what the house already draws. 143 households in the ward had electric-only central heating at the 2021 Census, and where that means storage heaters charging overnight, a car on charge would be drawing power in the same hours. Earthing comes next. Many homes take their earth from the network’s own cable on a PME supply, and BS 7671 bars that earth from serving a charge point used outdoors unless one of the measures it lists is in place, most often open-PEN protection built into the charger or a separate earth electrode. The survey confirms which applies to your house or flat.

TN16 1AA, the postcode we use for Westerham, falls in Elexon grid supply point group _J, the South Eastern Power Networks licence held by UK Power Networks. Under the Energy Networks Association’s process, a charger that meets the criteria for notification is connected and then notified to UK Power Networks within 28 days. Where it does not, an application goes in before fitting, and any larger main fuse or service cable is UK Power Networks’ own work.

Public charging across Sevenoaks District

On 1 July 2026 the Department for Transport counted 117 public chargers across Sevenoaks District, 29 of them 50 kW or faster: 95.3 per 100,000 people, behind the South East’s 159.4 and England’s 172.7. It is a district count, Sevenoaks, Swanley and Edenbridge included, and the next one, for 1 October, is provisionally due on 25 November 2026. For a Westerham household with a space of its own, that ratio is the case for charging at home; for one that can only park at the kerb, it is the network it relies on until Kent County Council decides.

Charging from a TN16 roof, and the prices

At TN16 1AA, PVGIS puts the yield of an unshaded 4 kWp array, facing south at 35°, at 4,164 kWh a year. A charger set to follow the panels sends the daytime surplus into the car rather than the grid, which suits the second or third car that stays at home while the first is out. Solar integration is an option on all six units we price, from the Hypervolt at £1,080 + VAT to the Andersen A2 at £1,600 + VAT. All prices are subject to VAT, which may vary with the job and is confirmed on the written quotation. Our EV charger installation page compares the six side by side.

From Glebe Farm Business Park in Keston, Westerham is 5.8 miles (9.3 km) away in a straight line. Wiring, testing and repairs elsewhere in the house are covered on our electrician in Westerham page.

02 Questions from Westerham

EV charger installation,
answered for Westerham.

We run three cars from one drive near Crockham Hill. Do we need more than one charger?

Not always. One charger can top up each car in turn overnight, so the first question is whether its lead reaches every space; Hypervolt leads on our price list come in 5 m, 7.5 m and 10 m lengths. A second 7 kW unit adds another load of about 32 A, so it is checked against your supply first. You would not be unusual: at the 2021 Census, 313 households in the Westerham and Crockham Hill ward had three or more cars or vans.

I rent a flat over a shop in Westerham. Can I get the OZEV grant for a charger?

Only if the flat comes with private, clearly defined off-street parking, such as an allocated bay you have a legal right to use. The OZEV grant for renters and flat owners then pays 75% of the cost of a socket, up to £500, and is funded until 31 March 2027; you need written permission from your landlord. If there is no bay, you are relying on public chargers: 117 across Sevenoaks District on 1 July 2026, 29 of them 50 kW or faster. At the 2021 Census, 31 households in the ward lived in a flat in a commercial building.

Our terraced cottage in Westerham opens straight onto the pavement. Is a home charger possible?

Not with a cable across the pavement, for now. OZEV's grant for households with on-street parking pays 75% of the cost, up to £500 until 31 March 2027, but only with a permanent cross-pavement solution that the highway authority has approved, and here that is Kent County Council. Its charging page says it does not currently allow cross-pavement solutions, such as cable gullies or cable mats, on the highway, and that it will update the page later in 2026 once it has decided. Terraces are common here: 494 households in the Westerham and Crockham Hill ward lived in one in 2021, 25.5% against 22.4% across the district.

Our house near the Green is listed. Can a charger go on the front wall?

Ask the council before assuming. Sevenoaks District Council's 2015 appraisal of the Westerham Conservation Area, home to about 100 listed buildings, notes that listing covers a building inside and out and any object or structure fixed to it, and that Listed Building Consent is required for alterations affecting its character. A position away from the historic walls, such as a post beside the parking space, may leave the building untouched, but whether any position needs consent is the council's decision. Mention the listing when you book, so the survey looks at positions with that in mind.
