Orpington Solar panels
Solar panels in Orpington
At Orpington's town point, an unshaded, south-facing 4 kWp array models 4,172 kWh a year in PVGIS. In Orpington ward 71.5% of households own their home and 69.1% live in a semi-detached or detached house, so on most streets the household decides about its own roof. Panels on a pitched house roof are normally permitted development, inside The Priory conservation area too, but a listed house needs planning permission. Our Biggin Hill office is 5.1 miles away in a straight line, and every Coutts install includes the G98 notification or G99 application to UK Power Networks.

Whose roof it is in Orpington ward
Orpington ward, on Bromley’s 2022 boundary, takes in The Priory, Goddington House and St Olave’s Grammar School; Knoll and other parts of the town sit in neighbouring wards. At the 2021 Census, 3,379 of its 4,729 households owned their home, 71.5% against 68.5% across the borough, and 1,870 of them owned outright with no mortgage. For the 557 households renting privately (11.8%, well below Bromley’s 17.4%) and the 750 renting from a council or housing association (15.9%, above its 13.2%), the landlord has to agree first.
Nearly half the ward’s households, 47.8%, live in a semi-detached house, where Bromley as a whole has 29.9%. Detached houses account for another 21.4%, and terraces only 10.9%, against 20.6% borough-wide. One household in five lives in a flat, and 113 live in a commercial building, such as a flat over a shop: 2.4%, nearly double Bromley’s 1.3%. We quote on your usage profile, time of use and available roof space, and on an Orpington semi that space is one half of a pair.
Interwar streets, postwar Goddington
Counting properties rather than households, the Valuation Office Agency’s Council Tax list at 31 March 2026 holds 5,740 in the eight statistical areas ONS assigns to the ward. Of those, 2,050 date from 1919 to 1939, 1,860 of them from the 1930s alone, and another 2,050 from 1945 to 1972. Only 220, or 3.8%, predate 1919, where Bromley has 17.0%, and 950, or 16.6%, were built from 2000 onwards, against 10.8% borough-wide.
The ages split across the ward. In Bromley 032, the area the House of Commons Library calls Goddington, about 1,500 of 2,580 properties went up between 1945 and 1972; in the ward’s other four statistical areas, about 1,560 of 3,160 date from 1919 to 1939. More than half the post-2000 properties, about 520, sit in a single area, Bromley 028C, which takes in BR6 0TW and BR6 0LS. The Planning Portal says building regulations will normally apply to roof-mounted panels, with the existing roof’s ability to carry their weight checked and proven, so the test applies to a 1930s semi and a postwar Goddington house alike.
The Priory, Broomhill and ten listed buildings
The Priory, Orpington became one of Bromley’s conservation areas on 14 May 1985, and about 87% of its area falls inside the ward. It holds five entries on the National Heritage List for England, among them the ward’s only two at Grade II*: The Priory itself and the Church of All Saints. Broomhill, Orpington, designated in 1989, carries the town’s name but lies outside the ward, in neighbouring Petts Wood and Knoll.
Inside The Priory, a house can still take panels on a pitched roof without an application, the road-facing slope included, provided they stand no more than 0.2 m proud of it and no higher than its highest part. The designation rules out walls, balconies and roof enclosures that front a highway, and a flat-roof array there needs Bromley’s prior approval first. Listing is the stricter test. Ten list entries fall in the ward: the two at Grade II* and eight at Grade II, among them Goddington House, Barn Hawe, the farmhouse at Tripe’s Farm, St Olave’s Grammar School and two coal tax posts. Permitted development doesn’t cover a listed house or a building within its curtilage, so panels there need planning permission. Our guide to when solar panels need planning permission covers Bromley’s Article 4 list and how to check an address on the council’s map.
What an Orpington roof generates
For 4 kWp facing due south at 35°, unshaded, the EU’s PVGIS model gives 4,172 kWh a year at Orpington’s town point, about 1,043 kWh per kWp. Of the seven Bromley towns we cover, only Chislehurst (4,178 kWh) and Petts Wood (4,174 kWh) model higher, and the spread down to Beckenham’s 4,125 kWh is just over 1%. Our guide to what solar panels cost in Kent and south-east London uses Orpington for its worked example, payback included. Across the whole borough, DESNZ counted 4,093 solar PV sites at the end of 2025, up 68% on the 2,431 five years earlier; that dataset stops at borough level, so it gives no Orpington count.
South Eastern Power Networks in BR6
BR6 0TW, BR6 9AA and BR6 0LS, three postcodes inside the ward, all return grid supply point group _J: UK Power Networks’ South Eastern Power Networks licence, as in West Wickham, while the postcodes we checked in Chislehurst, Bickley and Beckenham return its London Power Networks licence. The connection rules are the same on both. If the panels and any battery on an Orpington house add up to 16 A per phase or less, roughly 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, G98 applies: the system is connected first and UK Power Networks is notified within 28 days of commissioning. Above that, G99 applies, and the application has to be accepted before installation. Every guide-priced Coutts system includes a 10 kWh battery alongside 4 to 8 kWp of panels, and storage counts towards the total, so the equipment chosen at survey settles the route; the G98 notification or G99 application is included either way.
5.1 miles from Biggin Hill
Orpington is 5.1 miles (8.3 km) from our office at 214 Main Road, Biggin Hill, in a straight line, and further by road. Our solar panel installations are designed and fitted by our own qualified electricians rather than a commission-led sales team. On TrustMark’s register, under licence 2677315, NICEIC is our scheme provider and solar PV is listed as an MCS-certified trade; MCS certification is what a system needs to qualify for Smart Export Guarantee payments. We are also RECC member 00072268 and a Which? Trusted Trader. If you want the wiring in an interwar or postwar house tested before panels go on, EICRs and our other electrical work in the town are on our electrician in Orpington page.

02 Questions from Orpington
Solar panels,
answered for Orpington.
Can I have solar panels on my house in The Priory conservation area in Orpington?
Usually, on a pitched roof, and that includes the slope facing the road, provided the panels stand no more than 0.2 m proud of the roof and no higher than its highest part, chimneys excluded. What the designation adds is a ban on panels fixed to a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway, and a prior approval application to Bromley before any flat-roof array. A listed house is outside permitted development altogether, so it needs planning permission. Check whether an Article 4 direction covers your street as well.
I live in a flat over a shop in Orpington. Can I have solar panels?
Ask Bromley's planning team before you collect quotes. At the 2021 Census, 113 households in Orpington ward lived in a commercial building, such as a flat over a shop: 2.4%, against 1.3% across Bromley. Permitted development sets one list of limits for a house and another for a block of flats. A house excludes any building containing flats, and a block of flats has to be made up wholly of flats, so a shop with flats above may fit neither list. If you hold a lease, check what it says about the roof too.
Can I get help paying for solar panels in Orpington?
Most households use the VAT relief rather than a grant: panels installed in a home carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% from 1 April 2027. Bromley is in the Greater London Authority's consortium for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which is for privately owned homes rated D to G, with household income usually £36,000 or less and, in London, savings under £25,000, with some exemptions. ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026 and funds solar only alongside a heat pump or qualifying electric heating. At the 2021 Census, 260 of Orpington ward's households (5.5%) had electric-only central heating, against 6.8% across Bromley, while 84.7% used mains gas alone.
Does UK Power Networks have to approve solar panels on an Orpington house?
Only above the G98 line. If the panels and any battery add up to 16 A per phase or less, about 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, the system can be connected first and UK Power Networks told within 28 days of commissioning. A larger system needs a G99 application, which UK Power Networks has to accept before installation. BR6 0TW, BR6 9AA and BR6 0LS, all inside Orpington ward, are on its South Eastern Power Networks licence; an MPAN core starting 19 on your electricity bill confirms it. We handle either route.
